Shandon residents arrested, toddler taken away after traffic stop

Two Shandon residents were arrested this morning by sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and child endangerment after a traffic stop. They may also be involved in rural burglaries, sheriff's officials said.

Frances Vaca Cardenas, 24, and Mares Leticia Rodriques, 18, which deputies say may not be her real name, were arrested at 10:42 a.m. at Highway 46 and Golden Hill Road. The deputy who stopped their vehicle was suspicious because the rear license plate of the car was covered and brand and model identification had been stripped off the vehicle.

An 18-month-old child was found standing in a car seat at the time of the stop, according to the Sheriff's Office, and a vial found in the vehicle tested positive for methamphetamine. The child was turned over to Child Protective Services.

Deputies also recovered various items that looked like they had been taken from a barn or a storage unit. These items match the kind of property taken in rural crime burglaries, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies plan to release photos of the property. Anyone who is missing similar items is asked to call the sheriff’s North County station at 434-4290.
