  A group of San Luis Obispo County’s best and brightest leaders have been selected as this year’s Top 20 Under 40 award winners.

  Now in its seventh year, The Tribune’s competition honors the accomplishments and achievements of young women and men under the age of 40 who have demonstrated excellence in their professions and commitment to community service. To be eligible, nominees must have lived and worked in San Luis Obispo County year-round.

  More than 100 entries were submitted online at www.sanluisobispo.com, and a review panel from the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation selected the winners at The Tribune’s request.

  “People may not remember what you did or what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel,” marketing entrepreneur Mary Verdin explained to The Tribune’s Top 20 Under 40 Award winners Thursday at the Madonna Inn.

  She was invited to give the keynote speech for the event, which each year honors San Luis Obispo County leaders younger than 40 who excel in their profession and in their service to the community.

  Verdin, owner and founder of a marketing firm of the same name, shared that advice and eight other things she’s learned in the eight years since she started her business, first as the sole employee in a 275-square-foot San Luis Obispo office, and now with 12 employees and several industry awards earned.

  County Counsel Warren Jensen and Deputy County Counsel Rita Neal have slogged through thousands of requests for information under the California Public Records Act.

  But when you ask them which one is the most memorable, both of them answer swiftly: the David Edge-Gail Wilcox debacle.

  The squalid county management behavior that came to light through Tribune requests for emails under the CPRA in 2009 struck Neal for “the nature, the volume, the amount of emails, the content.”

  Event raises $14,500 for CASA

  A community get-together held recently in Atascadero to raise money for the county’s abused and neglected children brought in $14,500, according to Court Appointed Special Advocates, the group that pulled the event together.

  Following a walk around Atascadero Lake Park, supporters enjoyed a Kiwanis barbecue and various festivities, including a bounce house for the kids. Disc jockey Kahuna, of the Coast 101.3 FM morning show, entertained.

  The $14,500 raised will help recruit, train and supervise volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in San Luis Obispo County.

  Pet overpopulation

  The Tribune’s editorial (April 22) about the aggressive-pet ordinance that makes it possible to hold landlords accountable for dangerous pets contains an important point.

  Aggressive pets can be an issue, to be sure, but those of us who work to improve the lives of dogs and cats know that overpopulation touches many more lives. In fact, estimates of stray, abandoned and feral cats in the North County range into the tens of thousands. Why not require landlords to accept only spayed or neutered pets?
