Brent VanderVeen passed for 158 yards including two acrobatic diving catches by Gabe Deleon and Garrett Owens and the Arroyo Grande High football team cut a 10-point deficit to one, 14-13, going into the second half against Paso Robles at War Memorial Stadium tonight.
Deleon scored on a 15-yard touchdown, and Owens added field goals of 27 and 22 yards, the second as the first half expired, for the Eagles (7-1, 4-0 PAC 7), who can clinch at least a share of their first league title since 2004.
Looking to stay in the playoff hunt, the Bearcats (2-4, 1-2 PAC 7) took a 14-3 lead on a 53-yard catch-and-run by Max Blanton at the end of the first quarter.
Paso Robles took a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jimmy Pacheco that capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive on the Bearcats first possession of the game.
Paso Robles quarterback Garrett Nelson passed for 147 yards and a touchdown in the first half and had the Bearcats threatening to score up 14-10 toward the end of the second quarter with his team expecting to receive the ball to open the second half.
But on second-and-9 at the Arroyo Grande 30-yard line, Nelson was intercepted by Owens with 2:01 left, and the Eagles drove for the field goal that cut the lead to one.
