Prep Roundup: Templeton football team shut out by LPL leader Lompoc

The Templeton High football team lost 28-0 Thursday night at Lompoc.

The Braves (8-0, 4-0 Los Padres League), the defending CIF-Southern Section Northwest Division champion, could be on track to play in a state bowl game in mid-December at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Earlier this week, Lompoc was ranked No. 1 in the Division III Southern California classification by both the Freeman Computer Ratings system and Cal-Hi Sports’ publication.

Thursday’s win by the Braves avenged their 31-21 loss to Templeton during the 2010 season.

Lompoc piled up 387 rushing yards altogether. Star junior running back Lavon Coleman rushed for 212 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries and also had a game-high 36 receiving yards.

Lompoc scored one TD every quarter. Quarterback Luciano Lopez was a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 52 yards and a score, and also ran for another TD and 63 yards on seven carries.

Templeton was held to 95 yards of total offense. Running back Matt Arace rushed for 51 yards on 18 carries for the Eagles.

The Eagles (4-4, 2-2 LPL), who came into the day ranked sixth in the Northwest Division poll, will look to bounce back with a rivalry game at home against Morro Bay next week.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

San Luis Obispo 3, Righetti 1

The Tigers (25-6, 10-1 PAC 7) rallied from a first-set loss to defeat the Warriors 24-26, 25-17, 25-15, 25-12.

Jessica Chellsen had 18 kills to lead San Luis Obispo, which clinched at least a share of the league title with the win.

The Tigers can win the PAC 7 title outright with a victory against Pioneer Valley in their home finale Tuesday.

Ariel Becker and Amelia Brown added 10 kills apiece, Maggie Eppright had 41 assists, and Linnea Ramirez had 25 digs for San Luis Obispo.

Atascadero 3, Pioneer Valley 0

After a 46-assist match earlier this week, Greyhounds setter Haley Ogden had 30 assists in a 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 sweep over the Panthers. Brittany Davis had 14 kills, and Kendall Featherstone had six for Atascadero (17-10, 8-4 PAC 7).

St. Joseph 3, Paso Robles 2

The visiting Knights outlasted the Bearcats 19-25, 26-24, 26-24, 18-25, 15-8 in the PAC 7 match.

Molly Donovan had 21 kills for Paso Robles (11-11, 4-7). Emily Cone had 11 kills and five blocks, and Jackie Caraveo recorded 24 digs.

Morro Bay 3, Santa Maria 0

Kylie Gacad had 25 assists, and Monica Santiago had 26 digs as the Pirates (12-17, 6-5 Los Padres League) swept the Saints 25-17, 25-14, 25-9 on the road.

Jill Brown had a team-high eight kills for Morro Bay.

Santa Ynez 3, Templeton 0

The first-place Pirates swept the visiting Eagles (12-4, 8-3) in the LPL match, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18.

Jeanine Madson had seven kills, and Autumn Russell had six kills for Templeton.

The Eagles need a win against Lompoc on Tuesday to clinch second place in the LPL.

Mission Prep 3, Lompoc 0

The Royals (12-5) swept the Braves 25-10, 25-15, 25-14.

Grace Ready had 14 kills and two aces, Sadie Casacca had 16 digs, four kills and two aces, and Shannon Dudley had 20 assists and 10 digs for Mission Prep.

Cabrillo 3, Nipomo 1

Stephanie Persky had 16 kills and 13 digs, but the Titans (10-16, 5-6 LPL) lost 25-23, 22-25, 25-8, 25-22 at home.

Cristina Ozzimo had 40 assists, and Sarah Stahl had 19 digs for Nipomo.

Coast Union 3, Cuyama Valley 0

The Broncos (12-4, 10-0 Coast Valley League) kept their perfect-set streak alive in league play with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-10 sweep of the Bears on the road.

Katelyn Lorenz had five kills and five aces, Nicky Ortiz had four kills, and Sophie Flemion had three kills, three blocks, four aces and 23 assists for Coast Union.

Coastal Christian 3, North County Christian 0

The host Conquerors swept the Crusaders 25-17, 25-17, 25-7 behind Leslie Henry’s 13 kills, 27 digs and three blocks.

JoAnn Lindstaedt had 26 assists for Coastal Christian (12-2, 9-1). Roni Garrison had six aces.

Kaysi Butler had a team-high nine digs for North County Christian (4-11, 3-8). Brianna Feld led with seven kills, Garreth Benham had three aces and Cheyenne Ricks recorded 10 assists.

BOYS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 18, Paso Robles 3

The Greyhounds (13-8, 9-2 PAC 7) received multiple-goal efforts from six players, including three goals apiece from Tanner Sandman and Cisco Bass.

Clint Doucette had five saves in goal, and Chandler Mankins had one save for Atascadero.

St. Joseph 7, San Luis Obispo 6

Ian Anderson and Kyle Sweasey scored two goals each, and Casey Blauer and Chase Anderson added one apiece as the Tigers (6-4 PAC 7) fell in a close one at home.

Darren Paul had 10 saves in goal for San Luis Obispo.

GIRLS TENNIS

Atascadero 13, Pioneer Valley 5

Rhi Dudley and Lauryn Cooper swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, Claire Jacobs and Kelly Boicourt swept 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, and Jackie Wulff won 6-1, 6-4 to lead the Greyhounds (7-8, 4-8 PAC 7) to a win in their home finale.

Bailey Taunt and Mallory Miller added two wins for Atascadero, sweeping their only sets 6-4, 6-0.

San Luis Obispo 11, Paso Robles 7

The Tigers (13-3. 9-2 PAC 7) clinched the No. 2 seed in the PAC 7 behind Tori Troesch, who swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 in the victory.

The doubles team of Darla Berkefeld and Courtney Gallagher also swept, winning 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 for San Luis Obispo.

St. Joseph 9, Paso Robles 9 (84-70)

The Bearcats (5-9, 2-9) came much closer to beating the Knights the second time around, but lost.

Since the sets were tied at nine apiece, the first tiebreaker was games won.

The No. 1 singles player for Paso Robles, Maria Petiy, swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-3. Caraline Redberg went 6-2, 6-2, 2-6. The doubles team of Laura Callahan and Kylie Pugh went 0-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Lompoc 9, Nipomo 9 (78-77)

After finishing in a dead tie against Templeton last week, Nipomo (4-10-1, 3-7-1) nearly tied again, but lost by one in the tiebreaker against the Braves.

Kelly Barrett swept 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. The doubles team of Gianna Abatti and Kelly Springford went 6-4, 4-3 on a default, 6-1. Lauren Kueffler went 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Orcutt Academy 13, Templeton 5

Shelby Baumgartner led the Eagles by sweeping her three matches 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

A senior, Baumgartner has now won 35 of her past 39 sets.

Mimi Cline won a set 6-1 for Templeton, and Sammar Smesne won the other set 6-2.
