‘Dogs reflect their upbringing. If puppies receive guidance and love from a variety of people, they’re predisposed to be good with people throughout their lives. Additionally, puppies that have the opportunity to play with other pups are predisposed to get along with other dogs once they’re adults.
“Betty’s unknown owner must have given her such opportunities because Betty has a gentle disposition. She walks well on a leash and is gently affectionate. Betty’s fine with like-minded dogs, easy going and laid-back, but her first love is people.
“One would have thought Betty’s owner, having trained and encouraged her devoted nature, would have come to the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter to look for Betty, but no.
“Last year, less than 50 percent of San Luis Obispo County stray dogs were claimed by their owners. And cats fared far worse, less than 3 percent of cat owners came to the shelter to redeem their pets.
“Betty’s a lovely middle-aged shepherd mix. She has kind eyes that reflect an old soul. Betty’s been at the shelter for over a month and we’re not expecting her owner to show.
“Dogs often reflect the best in human nature: open to others, loving of family and devoted to those who care for them. Betty’s one such dog looking for a life-long home.”

The adoption fee is $75 for cats and $100 for dogs, plus a $23 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents.
The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, basic vaccinations, microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, new collar and ID tag, and carrier for cats.
Pismo clinic to host pet costume contest
The Pismo Beach Vet Clinic presents its free Halloween Pet Costume Contest from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Registration will start at 12:30 p.m. with judging at 1 p.m. All pets are welcome. Categories will include: Best Pet Duo, Best Human and Pet Duo, Best Canine Costume, Best Feline Costume and Best Exotic Pet Costume.
There will be food, drinks, and prizes. A Haunted Clinic will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is free, but all donations will benefit the clinic’s H.E.L.P. fund.
