Atascadero State Hospital’s five employee union groups gathered with locals and state officials Sunday to remember Donna Gross, a Napa State Hospital psychiatric technician strangled and killed by a patient in October 2010.
Her death also commemorates efforts to improve safety and treatment of patients at facilities statewide, organizers said.

The vigils — which featured bagpipes, flowers and a photo of Gross at ASH’s entrance in Atascadero — took place at all of California’s five state hospitals and two development centers Sunday.
