Prep Roundup: St. Joseph easily wraps up PAC 7 golf titles

Marissa Gutierrez of St. Joseph High shot an 8-over 80 to medal at the PAC 7 girls golf finals Thursday at Blacklake Golf Course in Nipomo to lead the Knights to a league championship and automatic CIF-Southern Section postseason appearance.

Desirae Gillaspy of St. Joseph won league MVP honors. The Knights won by 62 strokes.

Arroyo Grande, which placed third at the tournament with a score of 520, came in second place as a team in the overall league standings. Anna Zhang finished tied for sixth place and qualified as an individual for the section postseason.

San Luis Obispo came in fourth at the tournament and in fifth in the PAC 7 overall. The Tigers’ Nora Zakaria shot a 95 to also advance.

Ashley Levanduski will also play on after leading Paso Robles with a 93. The Bearcats finished in sixth at the tournament and overall.

Atascadero was fifth in tournament play and finished third overall in the league standings. The Greyhounds’ Marissa McClain finished in fifth place as an individual and was the highest non-St. Joseph golfer with a 92.

Los Padres League finals

Cabrillo’s Morgan Salm earned medalist honors with a 5-under 31 at La Purisima, leading the Conquistadores to the team title with a score of 237. Nipomo came in third at 256, followed by Morro Bay in fourth with 273.

The Titans’ Sara Clark and the Pirates’ Gina Wongwatcharanon will both play on at the Southern Section individual competition Oct. 31 at River Ridge in Oxnard.

In the final overall league standings for the season, Cabrillo and Santa Ynez tied for first, with the Conquistadores earning the league’s top postseason draw.

Nipomo finished third and Morro Bay fourth.

GIRLS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 10, San Luis Obispo 8

The Eagles (18-1, 10-0 PAC 7) clinched at least a share of the PAC 7 title behind freshman Sophie Whittle in the road victory over the Tigers.

Whittle, ranked 46th in the Southern California 14-year-old age group, improved her already-perfect PAC 7 record to 22-0 with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 performance.

With the match on the line, freshman Melina Rodgers was substituted in to play with Brianna Flood in the final doubles set of the day. Rodgers and Flood won the set 6-2, giving Arroyo Grande the clinching victory.

Lauren Hayashi went 6-0, 1-6, 6-0 in singles, and Alex Mero went 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 for Arroyo Grande. The Eagles’ doubles team of Stephani and Amber Domako (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) also picked up two wins.

For San Luis Obispo, the doubles team of Abigail Will and Joelle Louis swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.

Tori Troesch (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) picked up two singles wins for the Tigers.

St. Joseph 10, Atascadero 8

Amber Petersen swept 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 for the Greyhounds, but Atascadero (6-7, 3-7 PAC 7) lost on the road.

The doubles teams of Mallory Miller and Rhi Dudley (4-6, 6-2, 6-2), and Claire Jacobs and Kelly Boicourt (0-6, 6-3, 6-3) picked up two wins apiece for the Greyhounds.

Nipomo 9, Templeton 9 (78-78)

The tie, which couldn’t be settled because of darkness, may need to be broken at a later date in case it factors into playoff implications.

Lauren Kueffler went 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 for Nipomo (4-8-1, 3-5-1). The doubles team of Ann Wardlaw and Rachael Moody swept 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 for the Titans.

No. 1 singles player Shelby Baumgartner led Templeton (2-6-1 LPL) with a sweep of 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.

Mimi Cline won two out of three, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Rachel Parker and Liz Kuhlemann went 6-4, 6-3, 2-6.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Templeton 3, Cabrillo 0

The Eagles (12-3, 8-2 LPL) swept 25-20, 25-21, 25-12 in their home finale.

Jeanine Madson (12 kills), Sarah Kretzu (six kills and seven aces), Holly Brookins (five kills) and Alyssa Price (six blocks, four kills) led the Templeton attack.

St. Joseph 3, Atascadero 0

The host Knights swept the Greyhounds (15-10, 6-4) in the PAC 7 match, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.

Brittany Davis led Atascadero with 14 kills. Haley Ogden had 30 assists, Kendall Featherstone had seven kills, and Hannah McMillan added six kills.

Mission Prep 3, Paso Robles 1

The Royals (9-4) knocked off the Bearcats 25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18.

Shannon Dudley led Mission Prep with 34 assists and also had two aces and eight digs. Jessa Culver had a match-high 18 digs, and Grace Ready had 15 kills and three aces in the winning effort.

Molly Donovan had a match-best 16 kills for Paso Robles (11-8). Jackie Caraveo had 11 digs for the Bearcats.

Nipomo 3, Santa Maria 0

Sarah Stahl had 18 digs, and Kiana Worth had 11 kills to lead the Titans (9-15, 4-5) to an LPL win.

Cristina Ozzimo collected 30 assists, and Stephanie Persky and Sam Baker each had eight kills for Nipomo.

North County Christian 3, Valley Christian 0

The visiting Crusaders (3-9, 2-7) beat the Lions 25-21, 26-24, 25-22 in a tight Coast Valle League sweep.

Cheyenne Ricks had North County Christian with eight assists and seven digs.

Shandon 3, Cuyama Valley 0

Dontavia Henderson led the Outlaws (9-4, 7-2 CVL) with 25 kills as Shandon swept 25-18, 25-11, 25-11.

Kayla Celis had a match-high eight aces and 12 kills. Leticia Muniz had 34 assists and three aces.

Coast Union 3, Maricopa 0

The Broncos (10-4, 8-0) continued their CVL dominance with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-16 sweep. Coast Union hasn’t lost a set in league play.

Sophie Flemion had 36 assists and eight kills. Katelyn Lorenz also had eight kills and eight aces. Amy Avina had six kills for the Broncos.

BOYS WATER POLO

San Luis Obispo 10, Paso Robles 6

The Tigers (16-9. 6-2 PAC 7) held a 9-2 lead after three quarters in a dominant home win.

Chase Anderson had three goals, Tyler LeSage and Nick Eaton had two each, and Nick Bea, Kenton Hauber and Trevor Meinhold had one each. Darren Paul had nine saves in goal for San Luis Obispo.

Arroyo Grande 15, Atascadero 7

The Eagles (12-6, 7-1 PAC 7) used a consistent, balanced attack to top the Greyhounds (6-16, 2-6).

Taylor Ross, Dennis Meffert, Roberto Dessi and Jack Empey each netted three goals for Arroyo Grande. Chandler Mankins made six saves, and Clint Doucette made three saves for the Eagles.

Matt Buckingham made 19 saves for the Greyhounds.

Chad Ponek had a hat trick for the Greyhounds, and Chris Cunningham and Drew Morgan each scored two goals.
