Giant pumpkins sprouted up in San Luis Obispos Mission Plaza on Thursday as the sixth annual Great Pumpkin Contest, organized by Farm Supply Company, got under way.
The seeds were planted in mid-April, though they can be planted as early as late March. The growers of the three heaviest pumpkins receive a share of $1,500 from Farm Credit West; additional prize categories include Most Beautiful and Most Unusual.
