  Recently I had the chance to peek at some photos of the interior of Atascadero’s City Administration Building, which is being repaired to the tune of about $42 million. Slightly half of that total will be paid for by the federal government while the city is paying the rest. The Federal Emergency Management Agency only will pay for what the 2003 San Simeon Earthquake damaged. But the city wants to do a complete restoration of the inside of the building, which Atascadero founder E.G. Lewis never got around to doing.

  When Lewis built the City Administration Building over a four-year period, he didn’t get the chance to really finish the detail work such as painting the columns and the plaster ceiling decorations.

  Add to that the fact the building was used for only about six years by Lewis before he was forced into receivership. The building was then sold to Frank Moran of Seattle in 1927 and turned into a satellite campus for a junior college that was based in Washington. Moran also purchased the Printery

  Part of Atascadero’s long-stalled Las Lomas housing complex, where construction stopped in 2008 after the bankruptcy of then-home builder R.W. Hertel & Sons, is back on track.

  Atascadero residents Mike Zappas and Gaylen Little purchased two-thirds of the original project, which gained city approval in 2003 and 2004, for an undisclosed sum to construct eight apartment buildings later this year.

  Zappas and Little also own the Hidden Oaks Apartments off El Camino Real.

  In reading that the city of Atascadero might have to pay back close to $8 million to the federal government over some FEMA funding issues is no surprise, especially pertaining to the Printery.

  The Office of Inspector General has determined via an audit that the Federal Emergency Management Agency might have been off-base in some of its allotments to the city following damages to facilities by the San Simeon Earthquake in December 2003.

  The city has agreed to an “accounting error” that is resulting in a payback of about $1,300 but is contesting the rest of the findings.

  Tickets available for 2nd annual Mayors' Winemaker Dinner in Atascadero

  Tickets are being sold for the second annual Mayors’ Winemaker Dinner in Atascadero on June 22. Proceeds will go toward completing a new performance venue at Atascadero Lake.

  The dinner, sponsored by Atascadero Kiwanis Club and the City of Atascadero, will begin at 5 p.m. at the Pavilion on the Lake, with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The annual Atascadero Lakeside Wine Festival will be held the next day from 4 to 8 p.m.

  The lakeside park has featured a bandstand since 1915. The Atascadero Kiwanis Club has remodeled the bandstand several times. It hopes to tear down the existing one in the fall, then finish building the new one in time for the 2013 concert season. The tentative cost of the new bandstand is $80,000.
