Prep Roundup: Atascadero tops San Luis Obispo in girls volleyball

Atascadero High girls volleyball coach Trent Lunceford said his team always gets an extra kick when the Greyhounds play San Luis Obispo.

Against the Tigers on Tuesday night, that kick gave Atascadero just what it needed to shake up the PAC 7.

The Greyhounds (5-2 PAC 7) rebounded from a match-opening 25-20 set loss to win the next three, 25-23, 25-16, 25-17, giving the Tigers their first PAC 7 loss of the year.

“For our team to be successful we just really have to have a lot of positive energy,” Lunceford said. “I think our team is always really motivated to play San Luis Obispo, and they showed it in their play.”

Atascadero’s Brittany Davis had 23 kills, while Kendall Featherstone had four aces, 10 kills and 17 digs.

For San Luis Obispo (20-6, 6-1 PAC 7), Ariel Becker had 12 kills, and Maggie Eppright had 30 assists.

“San Luis is a very talented team they have a lot of talented players. They are not an easy team to beat,” Lunceford said. “We weren’t going to budge and we kept pushing and play as hard as we can.”

With Arroyo Grande defeating Righetti, the Tigers now share the top spot in the PAC 7 with the Eagles. The Eagles’ only league loss was a 3-1 defeat by San Luis Obispo on Sept. 27.

Arroyo Grande 3, Righetti 1

The Eagles (17-4, 6-1 PAC 7) moved into a tie for first in the PAC 7 with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-27, 25-13 win.

Alyssa Koenig led the Eagles with 11 kills and added two blocks and two aces.

Madison Jacobs and Kylie Anderson had nine kills each, and Millisa Morrow had a team-high 36 assists.

Morro Bay 3, Templeton 1

Kylie Gacad had 31 assists, 26 digs and four blocks as the Pirates rebounded from a 26-24 loss in the first set to come back and win the next three, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18.

Taylor Thomsan had 10 kills, and Monica Santiago had 19 digs for the Pirates (5-9, 4-3 Los Padres League).

Sarah Kretzu and Autumn Russell led Templeton (10-3, 5-2 LPL) with 12 and nine kills apiece, respectively.

Zoe Bond added a team-high 34 digs.

Coast Union 3, Shandon 0

Nicky Ortiz had eight kills, four aces and 11 digs, while Sophie Flemion had seven kills, four aces and 37 assists for the Broncos (7-4, 6-0 Coast Valley League) in their 25-9, 25-22, 25-14 win over the Outlaws.

Dontavia Henderson had nine kills and three blocks for Shandon (6-4, 4-2), and Kayla Celis also had 15 digs and two aces, while Kathryn Gearhart had three aces and nine digs.

Coastal Christian 3, Maricopa 0

The Conquerors swept the Indians 25-14, 25-15, 25-11 for their fifth CVL win of the season.

Leslie Henry led Coastal Christian (8-1, 5-1 CVL) with 18 kills and five aces. Koral Wright had 27 digs and five aces, and JoAnn Lindstaedt had 20 assists.

North County Christian 3, Orcutt Academy 1

After losing the first set 12-25, the Crusaders pulled themselves out of a second-set deficit to sweep the Spartans in the last three sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-13.

North County Christian’s Brianna Feld had a team-high 13 kills, while Cheyenne Ricks led the Crusaders in aces (seven), assists (nine) and digs (11).

GIRLS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 15, Righetti 3

Sophie Whittle and Lauren Hayashi each swept three sets for the Eagles in singles, Alex Mero swept her two, and Elizabeth Mero won her only matchup of the day, as well.

Arroyo Grande (14-1, 7-0 PAC 7) went 6-3 in doubles.

San Luis Obispo 14, Atascadero 4

The Tigers (9-2, 6-1 PAC 7) defeated the Greyhounds behind straight-set victories from Tori Troesch in singles, and India Hoffman and Darla Berkefeld, and Lauren Hutkin and Joelle Lewis in doubles.

“The girls played outstanding. We’ve shown a lot of improvement since the beginning of the season and it showed today,” Tigers coach Gary Etheredge said.

Troesch won 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, Hoffman and Berkefeld won 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, and Hutkin and Lewis won 6-1, 6-2, 7-5.

Paso Robles 13, Pioneer Valley 5

The Bearcats improved to 2-5 in the PAC 7 with their victory over the Panthers.

Paso Robles’ No. 1 singles player, Maria Petiy, led the way with 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 wins.

The No. 2 doubles team of Riley Caruana and Laura Callahan also swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Orcutt Academy 13, Coast Union 5

The Broncos were left searching for their first win of the season as Orcutt Academy (12-1) won the nonleague match.

Coast Union’s No. 1 singles player, Alex Zaragoza, won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Santa Maria 13, Mission Prep 5

The Saints defended their home courts, defeating the visiting Royals (3-7).

Ruslana Cannell and the doubles team of Ricquel Santos and Sophie Seid earned Mission Prep’s wins.

Santos and Seid won 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, and Cannell won two of three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Santa Ynez 13, Nipomo 5

The Pirates defeated the Titans (2-8, 2-5 LPL) with four sweeps.

Nipomo’s Lauren Kueffler went 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in singles.

Gillian Johnson carded a 46 for the Tigers at par-35, 9-hole Dairy Creek.

Anna Talmage shot a 55 for San Luis Obispo (2-8, 0-6 PAC 7).

Arroyo Grande 243, Paso Robles 252

Paso Robles’ Claire Baldal was the medalist after carding a 40 in the Bearcats’ loss to the Eagles at Hunter Ranch.

Ramie Castilleja (44) and Rachel Harris (52) both shot personal bests for Arroyo Grande (6-1).

Atascadero 248, Pioneer Valley 286

The Greyhounds (4-1 PAC 7) defeated the Panthers at Chalk Mountain behind medalist Marissa McClain.

McClain shot an 8-over 43, while Danyele Rampone followed with a 46.

BOYS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 18, St. Joseph 1

The Eagles (10-6, 5-1 PAC 7) overpowered the Knights early, registering a five-goal lead in the first quarter.

They were led in scoring by Cisco Bass, Tanner Sandman and Nick Chapman, with three goals each.

Goalies Chandler Mankins and Clint Doucette totaled six saves.

San Luis Obispo 18, Pioneer Valley 5

Ten different Tigers players scored as San Luis Obispo (12-8, 4-2 PAC 7) powered past the Panthers.

Casey Blauer led the Tigers with five goals, while Nick Eaton added three.

San Luis Obispo goalie Garrett Cohune had four saves.
