Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande girls win at Clovis cross country meet

The Arroyo Grande High girls cross country team led an impressive showing from county teams Saturday at the Clovis Invitational, winning its race with a team score of 94 points on the 5K state meet course at Woodward Park in Clovis.

In the 12th race of the day, the Eagles placed three runners in the top seven and four in the top 16. Hannah Stevens (18 minutes, 55 seconds) finished in third place, 18 seconds behind winner Hannah Bell of Esperanza. Elizabeth Heyde (sixth, 19:16), Emily Johnston (seventh, 19:17), Jessica Morosoli (16th, 19:37) and Devin Corea (47th, 20:23) rounded out the scoring for Arroyo Grande.

Paso Robles finished 13th in the same race. Danica Boggs (63rd, 20:44) was the top Bearcats finisher.

In the third race of the day, San Luis Obispo’s Christine Hoffman placed first with a time of 18:23, pacing the Tigers to a fourth-place finish with a team score of 139 points. Clovis North placed first with 86.

For San Luis Obispo, Micayla Rennick placed 11th (19:40), Leah Rife-Dupuy placed 20th (19:56) and Olivia Carmo placed 49th (20:42).

Atascadero placed 16th in the race with 391 points. Miriam Orozco was the highest finisher for Atascadero at 56th (20:50).

Templeton placed 10th in the first race of the day with 240 points. Savannah Camacho placed third for the Eagles (18:34), 10 seconds behind first-place finisher Nicole Lane of El Molina. Mayfield was the top team with 91 points.

On the boys side, San Luis Obispo placed second as team in the fourth race of the day with 172 points, 84 points behind first-place St. John Bosco. Seamus Land placed third for the Tigers (15:50), and teammate Luke Kraemer placed fourth (15:55). Danny Martinez of St. John Bosco placed first (15:16).

Atascadero placed 19th as a team in the race with 498 points.

Paso Robles placed fourth in the 13th race of the day with 154 points. Zander Souza (16:16) placed eighth to pace the Bearcats, and teammates Matt Nottenkamper (24th, 16:40), Aidan Farrell (35th, 16:47) and Nick Stair (39th, 16:51) weren’t far behind.

Arroyo Grande placed eighth in the same race with 222 points, led by Josh Davis’ fourth-place finish (15:56). Jonathon Corley (16:48) placed 36th for the Eagles.

Templeton placed 22nd as team in the second race of the day with 626 team points.

BOYS WATER POLO

San Luis Obispo Tournament

Nipomo (15-5) paced all area teams with a fourth-place finish in the San Luis Obispo Tournament.

The Titans went 1-2 on the second and final day of the tournament, defeating Crespi 8-5, led by Mark Baker with five goals. But Nipomo lost 15-7 to California and 10-6 to Alhambra in the third-place match.

The Titans’ Brennan Bryant was named to the all-tournament team.

“Both teams showed they ran out of gas (in the third-place match). My team had a hard time transitioning from offense to defense.

But, I was very happy with a fourth-place finish in such a large tournament,” Nipomo coach Justin Jewell said.

Arroyo Grande (9-6) finished ninth, defeating Brea Olinda 9-7 and Newbury Park 18-7. The Eagles’ only loss came in a close battle with Clovis North, 11-9.

After losing two games Friday, Paso Robles went 3-0 in the loser’s bracket Saturday, defeating Atascadero 13-6, Morro Bay 7-3 and Pioneer Valley 12-2.

The Bearcats overcame a two-goal halftime deficit against Atascadero, outscoring the Greyhounds 7-2 in the third quarter. Paso Robles won with a balanced attack as 10 different Paso Robles players had goals.

San Luis Obispo (11-8) defeated Santa Ynez 15-10, Moorpark 12-7 and Los Altos 15-11. Casey Blauer led all Tigers scorers in each game, while averaging five goals a game.

Morro Bay lost its first two games to Paso Robles and Atascadero (8-6) before defeating Pioneer Valley 8-5.

GIRLS TENNIS

Dos Pueblos 11, San Luis Obispo 7

The Tigers’ top two singles players swept their matches in a nonleague road loss.

Tori Troesch won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and Abigail Will won 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 for the Tigers (8-2).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Coastal Christian 3, Providence Hall 0

The Conquerors (7-1) defeated Providence Hall in straight sets, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21.

Leslie Henry led Coastal Christian with 17 kills, 31 digs and four aces. JoAnn Lindstaedt had 27 assists, and Koral Wright added 33 digs.
