North County Christian, Shandon drop CVL football games

Down 30-28 at the half, North County Christian (2-3, 0-1 Coast Valley League) was outscored 20-12 the rest of the way in the 50-40 home football loss.

The high-scoring game featured excitement early with back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns in the first quarter, first on a 74-yard return by Valley Christian’s Dustin Taylor and next on a 73-yard return by North County Christian’s Daniel Katches. Katches would also finish with 139 rushing yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and 74 receiving yards on six catches for the Crusaders.

North County Christian quarterback Keelan Willison was 9 for 26 passing for 146 yards and a touchdown. Willison also rushed for two touchdowns.

The Crusaders outgained the Lions 357 yards to 261, and also recovered three Valley Christian (3-2, 1-0) fumbles, but couldn’t capitalize on the turnovers.

Cuyama Valley 38, Shandon 6

The Outlaws committed five turnovers in the CVL loss to Cuyama Valley (5-0, 1-0).

Michael Portney led Shandon (2-3, 0-1) in rushing yards (69) and passing yards (35). He also threw for the Outlaws’ only touchdown, a 35-yard pass to Hector Rangel.

“They have a heck of a football team. Our big highlight, our 15 minutes of fame, was holding them below their season average of 44 points,” Shandon coach Marc Sandall said.
