College Roundup: Cal Poly's women's soccer team shuts out Cal State Northridge

The Cal Poly women’s soccer team defeated Cal State Northridge 2-0 on Friday behind a shutout performance from senior goalkeeper Brook Gauvin.

Despite being outshot 15-11, Gauvin held the Matadors scoreless with seven saves.

The Mustangs (8-5-1, 2-1-0 Big West Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute off forward Cici Kobinski’s second goal of the season, assisted by Mckenzie Orand.

Cal Poly’s second goal of the game came in the 90th minute, when Cal State Northridge (3-7-2, 1-1-1) pulled its goalkeeper for a free kick, and forward Sara Lancaster stole the ball for an open net goal. It was Lancaster’s sixth goal of the season.

MEN’S TENNIS

Cal Poly at ITA Championship

Arroyo Grande High graduate Andre Dome continued his run through the consolation bracket at the ITA Championship with a straight-set victory over Illinois’ Stephen Hoh, winning 6-0, 6-3.

Dome will next face No. 27th-ranked George Coupland of Mississippi State today. If he advances, he will play one more match today and one more Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine 3, Cal Poly 0

The Anteaters (6-9, 1-3) swept the Mustangs (7-11, 2-3) at home 28-26, 25-22, 25-21 in a Big West match.

The Mustangs led the first set 18-10 before UC Irvine rallied to win the set, changing the momentum for the match.

Jennifer Keddy led the Mustangs with 15 kills and 12 digs. Kristina Graven also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Lauren Law had a team-high 16 digs.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Pasadena City Tournament

Cuesta College (12-7) split two games in Pasadena.

In game one, Cuesta defeated host Pasadena 13-8. Alexandria Bernard had five goals for the Cougars, Alex O’Connor had four, and four other Cuesta players added one goal apiece. Loren Kasenberg (seven saves) and Carly Glogovac (four) split time in goal for Cuesta.

In game two, Cerritos, the third-ranked team in California, defeated the Cougars 10-8.

Glogovac had five goals, Erin Hasenkamp had two, and Julia Tatarian had one for Cuesta. Kasenberg had 11 saves in goal.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Riverside Tournament

Cuesta (8-7) won both of its games in Riverside.

In game one, Cuesta defeated Orange Coast 11-8 behind a balanced offensive attack. Dragan Dincic had four goals, Paul Davis and Luka Vukomanovic had two goals each, and four other Cougars added one goal apiece. Tom Ross had 14 saves in goal for Cuesta.

In game two, the Cougars took an 8-2 halftime lead and never looked back in a 14-8 victory over L.A. Valley.

Eric Marsh and Vukomanovic had four goals each, Dincic had two and Matt Giancanelli, Derrick Graham and Spencer Silva each scored a goal for Cuesta. Ross had eight saves in goal.

The Cougars advanced to the winner’s brackets and will play Riverside and Long Beach today.

CROSS COUNTRY

Western State Conference Preview

Devon Kelsey’s winning time of 20 minutes, 7 seconds on the 5K course in Santa Barbara propelled the Cougars to a third-place women’s team finish with 64 points. Glendale won with 22 points.

The next Cougars runner to finish was Casey Urman in 21:13 in 9th place.

On the men’s side, the Cougars finished third in the team race with 71 points.

Paul Denlinger was Cuesta’s top finisher over the 4-mile course, placing second in 21:50. The next Cuesta runners were Danny Thomas (22:30) and Chris Gobell (22:33) who finished 12th and 15th, respectively.

L.A. Valley won the team title with 47 points. Mizrael Mendez of Glendale was the individual winner in 21:38.
