Pioneer Valley at San Luis Obispo

Final:

San Luis Obispo is off to a perfect 2-0 start in PAC 7 play and is 5-1 overall after beating Pioneer Valley 28-0 at home.

Junior quarterback and first-year starter Garrett Giovanelli who threw for a touchdown in the win over the Panthers. The Tigers defense did bend, but would not break. He threw for a touchdown for the Tigers, who also had rushing touchdowns from Jacob Flores and Bryan Coburn. Coburn's first-half touchdown was set up by two Giovanelli completions of 41 and 22 yards.

After giving up an interception to Pioneer Valley at the end of the third, San Luis Obispo faced a third and five on their own 10-yard line to start the fourth.

Third quarter:

The Tigers offense looked strong after a slow start against the Panthers.

San Luis Obispo running back Jacob Flores ran for a 32-yard touchdown with 4:58 left in third quarter, putting the Tigers up 21-0 and giving them control of the game.

The Tigers got the ball back and were driving again, but an interception by the Panthers defense on the San Luis Obispo 41-yard line gave them a chance to stay in the game with 1:51 left in the quarter.

Pioneer Valley ended the quarter with a third-and-5 from the Tigers' 10-yard line, down 21-0.

Halftime:

It took a quarter and a half, but the Tigers offense finally woke up against a Pioneer Valley defense that had sacked the quarterback on the first two plays of the second quarter.

San Luis Obispo running back Bryan Coburn punched in a 6-yard touchdown run with 5:59 left in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 7-0 over the visiting Panthers. Junior quarterback Garrett Giovanelli set up the touchdown run with passes of 41 and 22 yards on the drive to Trevor MacLeod and Trevor McGuire, respectively.

Giovanelli then struck again with 1:57 left in the half, finding McGuire for a 38-yard touchdown pass over two defenders in the end zone, giving San Luis Obispo a 14-0 lead before the end of the half.

Giovanelli thus far is 6-of-10 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown, and McGuire has a game-high 60 yards receiving and a touchdown on two catches for the Tigers.

First quarter:

The San Luis Obispo High football team opened up the first quarter with a strong drive into Pioneer Valley territory in their PAC 7 matchup but failed to put up any points after a 32-yard field goal attempt by Tanner Kahn missed wide left.

Both teams struggled to find a groove offensively, with neither side able to put any points on the scoreboard. The Tigers' offensive line has struggled to stop the Panthers' aggressive pass rush.

The most exciting play of the quarter was a tipped-pass catch by Pioneer Valley’s Gabriel Fuentes that went for 25 yards. However, the Tigers defense held strong and forced a punt, and ended the first with the ball, second-and-9 at their own 21-yard line.

Cabrillo at Nipomo

Final:

Cabrillo won 21-14 thanks to fourth-quarter touchdown to leave the Conquistadores 5-1 and 2-0 in the Los Padres League. Nipomo fell to 1-4 and 1-1.

Third quarter:

Nipomo's J.T. Wells returned the second-half kickoff more than 90 yards for a touchdown to help the Titans tie Cabrillo 14-14 in a Los Padres League.

Wells' touchdown return was the only score in the third quarter.

Halftime:

After three straight three-and-outs, a botched punt return and accounting for negative 7 yards from scrimmage, the Nipomo High football team had an offensive explosion on its last possession of the first half against visiting Cabrillo (4-1, 1-0).

Trailing 14-0, The Titans racked up three first downs, and Chris Souza scored on a 16-yard touchdown run with less than a minute left in the second quarter to help cut the Conquistadores' lead in half with the Nipomo (1-3, 1-0 LPL) due to receive the ball to start the third.

Cabrillo got two rushing touchdowns from Isaiah Montes, who ran the ball in from 4 and 6 yards out.

The Conquistadores took a 7-0 lead with a seven-play, 69-yard drive that spent only 2 minutes, 21 seconds of game time.

After that, the teams traded unproductive drives, combining for six straight three-and-out possessions and failing to convert on seven straight third downs.
