  The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law two years ago by President Barack Obama. More than 150 changes have gone into effect, many impacting women’s health.

  Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood, has called the Affordable Care Act the “greatest advance this country has seen in women’s health care in 45 years.”

  When the full provisions of the act take effect in 2014, women will no longer be charged more for care than men. Right now, a 22-year-old woman could be charged 150 percent of the insurance premium that a 22-year-old man pays. Women will no longer be denied coverage because they are sick, pregnant or a victim of domestic violence.

  Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo will become the county’s sole Level III trauma center March 1, allowing it to heighten its level of trauma care to area residents.

  The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors approved the agreement and the designation Tuesday morning.

  “While we have four hospitals that all offer emergency medicine, Sierra Vista will be the only facility with a specialty designation for trauma treatment,” Steve Lieberman, county emergency medical services director, wrote in an email to The Tribune.

  In March 2010, President Obama signed The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as “Obamacare.” Both the president and Democrats caved in early, inviting those with an “interest” in health care to the table, so this law is badly flawed. In a sense, the foxes were invited to help redesign the henhouse.

  Community Health Centers of the Central Coast receives grant

  Community Health Centers of the Central Coast has been awarded a three-year grant that will allow it to improve the medical care it delivers to Medicare recipients and other patients in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

  The award, called an advanced primary care demonstration grant, comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funding was made available by the health reform law, the Affordable Care Act.

  Such grants are designed “to combat the explosive growth in health care costs by improving the quality and coordination of health care services,” according to Rep. Lois Capps, the Santa Barbara-based Democrat who represents coastal San Luis Obispo County.
