  Cal Poly’s expanded recreation center is slated to open next week, offering students, faculty, staff and alumni significantly more space to exercise.

  The nearly $72 million facility was approved in a student vote in 2008. Students are paying for the new facility through increases of $65 per quarter in fees.

  The facility includes basketball courts, weight-lifting areas, cardio machines, sand volleyball courts and a pool area with barbecue pits.

  Despite two legal challenges, local agencies are moving full speed ahead to implement a new requirement to reduce dust blowing off Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.

  State Parks is working to set up some mobile monitoring stations in the Dunes that will measure dust levels during the windy springtime when dust emissions are highest, said Dunes Superintendent Andy Zilke.

  Meanwhile, the county Air Pollution Control District is beginning a separate project to establish a series of temporary monitoring stations on the Nipomo Mesa that will allow the district to map the dust plume coming off the park, said Larry Allen, air pollution control officer.

  There was no North Coast Advisory Council election May 1. Instead, the council is to appoint candidates who applied for vacancies in even-numbered areas, and the group continues seeking alternates and representatives for some positions.

  After the filing period ended March 21, it appeared the only election would be for Area 6, where candidate Judith Martinez was to face off against current alternate Tom Gray, who chairs the busy Land Use/Projects Committee.

  However Martinez withdrew her application April 18. In an email to council Chairwoman Joyce Renshaw, the candidate said that, “due to a medical situation with my mother, I cannot devote the necessary time towards being an effective member.” So, Gray will become the member, because as of the end of the May 16 meeting Renshaw will have termed out. She is the new member on the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission.
