Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande girls volleyball team bounces back to sweep Paso Robles

The Arroyo Grande High girls volleyball team swept Paso Robles 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 on the road Thursday night to bounce back from its first loss in league play earlier this week.

Madison Jacobs tied for the team lead with 12 kills and three aces and also collected two blocks to pace the Eagles.

“We had a player injured, so we moved Jacobs from the middle to the right to open her up for more attempts,” Arroyo Grande coach Ernie Santa Cruz said. “We just came out with more confidence, looked sharper, and were more aggressive than we were in our loss (to San Luis Obispo on Tuesday).”

Alyssa Koenig also had 12 kills and had three blocks and an ace for Arroyo Grande (13-3, 4-1). Millisa Morrow had 36 assists and two aces, and Kylie Anderson had seven kills, three aces, and two blocks.

Molly Donovan led the Bearcats (3-9, 2-2) with 11 kills. Elli Bernal contributed seven kills.

San Luis Obispo 3, St. Joseph 0

The Tigers continued to show why they’re the team to beat in the PAC 7 by sweeping the Knights 25-21, 25-16, 25-17.

Linnea Ramirez had 17 digs, Jessica Chellsen notched eight kills, and Maggie Eppright posted 24 assists for San Luis Obispo (14-4, 4-0).

Atascadero 3, Righetti 1

The Greyhounds (10-5, 3-2 PAC 7) won 26-24, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23.

Brittany Davis had four aces and nine kills, Mary Kate Evans had four aces and 13 kills, and Kendall Featherstone had 10 kills and 16 digs for Atascadero.

Nipomo 3, Lompoc 1

The Titans (6-9, 2-2 LPL) rallied from a first-set loss to win 23-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-6. Stephanie Persky had 18 kills, Taylor Nevitt had 13 kills, Cristina Ozzimo had 31 assists, and Sarah Stahl had 14 digs for Nipomo.

Templeton 3, Mission Prep 1

Jeanine Madson had 14 kills, 15 digs and seven aces to lead the Eagles (8-1) to a 25-17, 25-27, 33-31, 25-23 victory over the Royals.

Santa Ynez 3, Morro Bay 0

The Pirates were swept on the road in the Los Padres League matchup 25-14, 25-19, 25-14.

Carli Watt had seven kills, Kylie Gacad had 17 assists, and Monica Santiago recorded 10 digs for Morro Bay (3-9, 2-2).

Coastal Christian 3, Shandon 0

The Conquerors (5-0, 3-0 Coast Valley League) swept the Outlaws (5-3, 3-1 CVL) 25-14, 25-11, 25-11.

Leslie Henry had 11 kills, Koral Wright had 23 digs, JoAnn Lindstaedt had 17 assists, and Roni Garrison had six aces for Coastal Christian.

Kayla Celis had 21 digs and two aces, Dontavia Henderson had 10 kills and two blocks, and Leticia Muniz had 18 assists for Shandon.

North County Christian 3, Cuyama Valley 0

Brianna Feld had four aces, seven kills and eight digs to lead the Crusaders (2-6, 1-3 CVL) to their first league victory.

BOYS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 9, San Luis Obispo 5

A balanced Eagles attack and strong second and third quarters propelled the Eagles.

Dennis Meffert, Roberto Tessi, Tanner Sandman and Jack Empey each netted two goals for the Eagles (5-4, 3-1).

Casey Blauer scored a game-high three goals for San Luis Obispo (6-5, 2-1).

St. Joseph 9, Atascadero 7

Despite Matt Buckingham’s 13 saves and a fourth-quarter rally, it wasn’t enough for the Greyhounds to climb out of their early hole.

Drew Morgan and Scott Ponek tied for the team lead with three goals, as Atascadero (4-8, 1-3) outscored the Knights 4-1 in the final period.

GIRLS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 16, Paso Robles 2

The Eagles handily defeated the Bearcats to remain undefeated both in league play and overall.

Brianna Flood and Joanne Phung swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 for Arroyo Grande (8-0, 5-0). Sisters Stephani and Amber Domako also swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Lauren Hayashi also swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1.

Santa Maria 16, Nipomo 2

Lauren Kueffler (3-6, 6-1, 1-6) and the doubles team of Ann Wardlaw and Gianna Abatti (4-6, 7-5, 5-7) represented the only wins for the Titans as Nipomo (2-5, 2-2 LPL) lost at home.

San Luis Obispo 13, St. Joseph 5

The Tigers pounced on the Panthers by going 9-0 in singles matches to win the PAC 7 matchup with ease.

No. 1 singles player Tori Troesch won 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 for San Luis Obispo (5-1, 3-1). Abigail Will swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-3, and India Hoffman swept 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Righetti 11, Atascadero 7

Despite Amber Petersen sweeping her three sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, the Greyhounds’ rough start to PAC 7 play continued.

Rhi Dudley and Sydney Sima won 6-3. Claire Jacobs and Kelly Boicourt won 6-0. Jackie Wulff and Lauryn Cooper also won 6-3 for the Greyhounds (4-4, 1-4).

Morro Bay 13, Coast Union 5

The Pirates secured their first win of the season behind the stellar 8-1 record of their doubles teams.

Sierra Wilcox and Lily Quirk swept 7-5, 6-1, 6-0, and Emily Franzmann and Claire Olson also swept 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 for Morro Bay (1-6). Tess Badrigian won two out of three, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.

Coast Union (0-6) was led by Alex Zaragoza, who swept her matches 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

GIRLS GOLF

Morro Bay, Nipomo at LPL Tournament

Morgan Salm of Cabrillo shot an even-par 36 to medal at the event hosted by Santa Maria at Cypress Ridge Golf Course to lead the Conquistadores to a narrow two-stroke win over Santa Ynez, 234-236.

Morro Bay’s Michelle Cordova finished with a 43 to place third and led her team to a fourth-place team finish.

Nipomo finished in third place as a team with a score of 250 and was led by Sara Clark’s 45.

PAC 7 Tournament

Arroyo Grande shot a 231 on the front nine and a 245 on the back nine to finish second in two tournaments at Rancho Maria Golf Course.

Anna Zhang shot a 7-over 42 on the front and a 3-over 41 on the back to lead the Eagles.

In the first tournament, St. Joseph shot a 219 to win, followed by Arroyo Grande, Atascadero (239), San Luis Obispo (244) and Paso Robles (250). Desirae Gillaspy of St. Joseph shot a 4-over 39 to medal.

In the second tournament, St. Joseph again took the team title, shooting a 213 with four golfers at 3-over or less. Danika Cochiolo shot a 1-over 39 to medal for the Knights. Arroyo Grande finished second, followed by San Luis Obispo (256), Righetti (261), Atascadero (264) and Paso Robles (270).

For the Tigers, Nora Zakaria shot a 45 in the first tournament and a 43 in the second.
