UPDATE: Shark reportedly spotted Monday off Cayucos

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: Cal Fire is reporting a third shark sighting in as many days. The latest sighting occurred today at 4 p.m. in Cayucos. A 10-foot-long shark was seen eating a seal 100 yards offshore at 24th Street and Old Creek Beach. Two separate shark sightings occurred in Shell Beach over the weekend. Officials consider these to be credible sightings and warning signs will be posted for three days at Shell Beach, Pismo Beach and Cayucos.

A large gray shark, estimated to be 12 feet or longer in size, was reported on Saturday and again on Sunday.

Saturday’s sighting was reported at Ocean Boulevard and Sunday’s sighting was reported at the Dolphin Bay hotel, according to County/Cal Fire.

Beaches remain open, but warning signs have been posted at the beaches in the area. They will stay up for three days.

Shark experts note that despite the frequency of sightings, attacks are uncommon.

According to the International Shark Attack File — a project of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida — the odds of being attacked are 1 in 11.5 million, and the likelihood of being killed is less than 1 in 264.1 million.
