The Arroyo Grande High football team, usually known for its prolific passing game, scored eight rushing touchdowns en route to a 56-21 victory over visiting Cabrillo on Friday.
The Eagles (3-1) piled up 475 rushing yards in the win, led by Henry Adelman’s 160 yards and three touchdowns. Brent VanderVeen, who was just 4 for 7 for 46 yards through the air, scored three touchdowns on 52 yards rushing.

VanderVeen played just one possession in the second half before giving way to backup Matt Wilkomm. Arroyo Grande featured five players with 50 or more yards on the ground.
But it wasn’t all offense at Doug Hitchen Stadium. The Eagles’ defense was stifling, forcing eight three-and-outs, six in the first half. Arroyo Grande forced two turnovers, picking off a Henry Fienga pass in the first quarter and recovering a fumble on a muffed punt at the end of the fourth quarter.
Gabe Deleon had 114 rushing yards, Garrett Owens had 62 yards on two carries, and Seth Jacobs had 72 rushing yards in the victory. Owens was a perfect 8 for 8 on extra points for the Eagles.
Arroyo Grande opens league play next week on the road against PAC 7 rival Atascadero.
Hunter Stemper ran for touchdowns of 3 and 1 yards, and Robert Berwick had a 71-yard touchdown run and a 27-yard touchdown pass to Logan Sprouse to spark the Greyhounds (3-1) to the nonleague rout at home.
Atascadero led 28-7 at halftime and 35-7 after three quarters.
The Greyhounds also had a 64-yard touchdown run by David Cracknell and a 35-yard touchdown run by Josh Osorio.
The nonleague game was canceled because of lightning in the Bakersfield area.
Royals quarterback Tyler Baty completed 21 of 45 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns in the nonleague victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, Trevor Fernandez caught a 41-yard pass from Baty to score the first touchdown of the game.
Villanova responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass and 30-yard field goal to take a 10-7 halftime lead.
It wouldn’t be until the final six seconds of the third quarter that Mission Prep (3-1) scored again with Baty running for a 56-yard touchdown.
With 4:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, Baty connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Shawn McNamara to seal the win.
Both teams finished with 12 penalties.
“We fought real well. Penalties made it a tough game for us, but we made plays when it mattered. We were able to win a tough game on the road after a tough loss last week,” Mission Prep coach Chad Henry said.
The Crusaders fell short to the Knights from Valencia.
North County (1-2) got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with Daniel Katches scoring 2-yard run and Peter Zippi adding the two-point conversion on a run.
The game was postponed in the second quarter because of lightning. No other information was provided.
