  This week, Nipomo property owners should receive letters asking them to verify some details about their parcels.

  The letter, from the Nipomo Community Services District, is one step in the process toward levying a tax that would fund the estimated $25.8 million capital cost of a pipeline to bring water to Nipomo from Santa Maria.

  The letters are being sent to about 6,600 owners of about 9,000 parcels, with owners of numerous properties receiving one letter per parcel, Nipomo services district General Manager Michael LeBrun said.

  One lane on the northbound and southbound sides of the Highway 101 bridge over the Santa Maria River will be closed during overnight hours starting Tuesday, Caltrans officials said.

  The work is part of the bridge’s $31 million widening project. The bridge between Nipomo and Santa Maria will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction and a bike path will be added to the span as well.

  The closure will be from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Caltrans does not have an ending date for the work.

  Now that the fate of aproposed, $26 million water pipeline linking Santa Maria and Nipomo is in the hands of voters, it’s time for the Nipomo Community Services District to step back and let the election run its course.

  Forget about spending an additional $43,500 on outreach efforts for April and May — a budget item that’s coming before the board today.

  Among other items, that $43,500 would cover the cost of sending out one more mailer to remind property owners of the voting deadline; a post-election mailer “to explain what the result means, implications and next steps”; and “ongoing outreach and communications strategy guidance.”

  UPDATE 3:40 p.m. Monday: The Arroyo Grande woman killed in a two-car crash Friday night has been identified as Anna Katherine Beckner, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

  Original story: An Arroyo Grande woman was killed in a two-car crash late Friday along Highway 166 about 50 miles east of Nipomo near the Santa Barbara County town of New Cuyama, according to the California Highway Patrol.

  The 40-year-old woman — whose name was not disclosed pending notification of her family — died of blunt force trauma, according to a Saturday press release from the CHP’s Santa Maria barracks.

  Nipomo Mesa voters face decision on water pipeline

  Over the next seven weeks, property owners on the Nipomo Mesa will have a chance to vote on whether to pay for construction of a pipeline to bring water to the community from Santa Maria.

  The Nipomo Community Services District, which is leading efforts to form an assessment district to pay for the pipeline, will mail ballots to residents by March 23 asking whether they will agree to levy a tax to cover the pipeline’s estimated $25.9 million capital cost.

  The ballot period will be open until the close of a May 9 public hearing; a majority of the returned ballots is required for passage. District board members voted unanimously Wednesday to start the balloting process.
