Prep Roundup: Anderson helps lead San Luis Obispo to boys water polo win over Atascadero

The San Luis Obispo High boys water polo team defeated Atascadero 10-8 in its PAC 7 opener Tuesday behind a strong fourth-quarter performance by Ian Anderson.

Anderson came up with two huge plays in the final period, scoring a goal with 4 minutes, 22 seconds left in the game and putting the Tigers (5-4) in front 8-7.

Forty seconds later, Anderson assisted Trevor Meinhold, who scored the game-winner, one of his three goals on the day, giving San Luis Obispo a two-goal lead and putting the game away for good.

Casey Bauer added four goals for the Tigers, and Nick Eaton and Kenton Hauber also scored one goal apiece. Darren Paul had 11 saves in goal.

“We’ve had close games in the fourth quarter and we’ve pulled away,” San Luis Obispo coach Aaron Sue said. “This is still a young team, returning just one starter from last year, so it’s good for the kids to learn how to do that.”

Chad Ponek had four goals to lead the Greyhounds in scoring. Drew Morgan had two goals for Atascadero.

Righetti 16, Arroyo Grande 7

Roberto Dessi had three goals and Nick Ruiz, Brock Johnson, Zach Georgii and Taylor Ross all scored one goal apiece, but the Eagles (0-2, 0-1 PAC 7) lost on the road to the fourth-ranked team in Division 4 of the CIF-Southern Section.

Chandler Mankins and Clint Doucette combined for nine saves in goal for Arroyo Grande.

Paso Robles 17, Pioneer Valley 8

Devon Nicklas had four goals, Monty Renfrow had three goals, and Jay Young and Mason Keller had two each as the Bearcats (5-6, 1-0 PAC 7) cruised at home.

Ben Nagengast had eight saves in goal, and five Paso Robles players scored one goal each in the victory.

Nipomo 12, San Marcos 9

Kirk Wilenius had 11 saves, and Cole Holloway and Marc Baker had four goals each as the Titans (8-2) pulled away late at home.

Derek Seaman had two goals, and J.W. Dobbe had one for Nipomo.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Atascadero 3, Paso Robles 2

The Greyhounds (1-1 PAC &) won a close match against the Bearcats, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-27, 15-11.

Atascadero’s Haley Ogden had 42 assists and 13 digs. Brittany Davis had 18 kills, and Kendall Featherstone had 12 kills and 23 digs.

Paso Robles’ Molly Donovan had 11 kills and two aces. Brittany Tackett had nine kills and three aces for the Bearcats (1-1 PAC 7).

Arroyo Grande 3, Pioneer Valley 0

The Eagles (11-2, 2-0 PAC 7) were dominant on the road, sweeping 25-5, 25-11, 25-11.

Alyssa Koenig had 15 kills and four aces, Millisa Morrow had 30 assists, 11 aces and six kills, and Savannah Welch had 16 digs and one ace for Arroyo Grande.

Morro Bay 3, Nipomo 0

The Titans (0-1 Los Padres League) fought through some close sets, but the Pirates (1-1) won 27-25, 25-22, 26-24.

Morro Bay’s Jill Brown had 12 kills, and Tia Gacad had eight kills and 11 digs.

Bee Hoose had 14 digs, and Kylie Gacad set 27 assists.

Nipomo’s Taylor Nevitt had 11 kills, and Stephanie Persky had nine kills and eight digs. Sarah Stahl had 22 digs, and Cristina Ozzimo had 33 assists and 10 digs.

Templeton 3, Santa Maria 0

The Eagles (5-1, 2-0 LPL) swept 25-6, 25-14, 25-16.

Jeanine Madson had nine kills, Zoe Bond had six kills and six aces, and Holly Brookins had 15 assists as Templeton cruised.

Coastal Christian 3, Valley Christian Academy 0

The Conquerors (1-0 Coast Valley League) swept the Lions 25-15, 25-17, 25-11.

Coastal Christian’s Leslie Henry had 15 kills, 22 digs, four blocks and four aces, and Koral Wright had eight kills, 22 digs and three aces. JoAnne Lindstaedt had 27 assists.

Coast Union 3, North County Christian 0

The Broncos (1-4, 1-0 CVL) swept the Crusaders 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 on the road.

Sophie Flemion had seven kills, six aces and nine digs, Nicky Ortiz had six kills, four aces and nine digs, and Amy Avina had three aces and 10 digs for Coast Union.

For North County Christian (1-4, 0-1), Cheyenne Ricks had five aces and four assists, Brianna Feld had six digs, and Chloe Bergquist had three kills.

Shandon 3, Maricopa 1

The Outlaws defeated Maricopa 25-21, 25-14, 25-27, 25-20 in their CVL opener.

Kayla Celis led Shandon (2-2) with 14 kills and 13 digs. Kathryn Gearhart had seven kills and eight aces, and Dontavia Henderson added four blocks and nine kills.

GIRLS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 18, Pioneer Valley 0

The Eagles (2-0 PAC 7) swept all their singles and doubles matches against the Panthers.

Freshman Sophie Whittle beat senior Caitlyn Brown 6-0. Lauren Hayashi defeated Brown 6-1, and Alex Mero also beat Brown, 6-1.

The doubles team of Brianna Flood and Joanne Phung swept 6-0, 6-1. The doubles team of Stephani and Amber Domako won 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.

Atascadero 11, Paso Robles 7

The Greyhounds’ Amber Petersen swept 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in singles, and Atascadero won its first league match of the season.

The Greyhounds (4-1, 1-1 PAC 7) had two doubles teams sweep as Rhi Dudley and Sydney Sima won 6-2, 6-1, 6-3, while Kelly Boicourt and Claire Jacobs won 6-4,6-3, 6-1.

For Paso Robles (4-1, 1-1), Maria Petiy won her last two matchups 6-1, 6-0, and Caroline Redberg also won her last two sets, 6-1, 6-0.

Mission Prep 11, Coast Union 7

Ruslana Cannell swept 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles team of Sophie Seid and Ricquel Santos swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 to lead the Royals (2-4) to a road victory.

Katy Haggard and Micaela Ricca were 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in their doubles matches for Mission Prep.

San Luis Obispo 11, Orcutt Academy 7

The Tigers (3-0) beat the previously undefeated Spartans (7-1). Three singles players won all nine sets 6-0 thanks to Tori Troesch, Abigail Will and India Hoffman.

San Luis Obispo’s doubles team of Darla Berkefeld and Lauren Hutkin won two of three with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Templeton 10, Morro Bay 8

Two singles players from Morro Bay won their matchups, including Sierra Wilcox (6-4, 6-2) and Lily Quirk (2-6, 6-0, 6-4).

Emily Franzmann and Claire Olson won 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in doubles.

No Templeton results were provided.

St. Joseph 221, Paso Robles 275

The Bearcats fell to St. Joseph at the nine-hole, par-36 Santa Maria Country Club for their second league loss of the season.
