Frank Mecham will run for a second term representing much of the North County on the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors, he announced Tuesday.
He would represent the First District, which includes Templeton, Paso Robles, San Miguel, Shandon, and the Nacimiento and Oak Shore areas.
A former mayor of Paso Robles, Mecham was elected to the county board in 2008, defeating 20-year incumbent Harry Ovitt.
In announcing his intentions, Mecham pointed to his record, which he said includes such countywide accomplishments as pension reform, the first-ever countywide economic strategy, and greater efficiency in government through the “process improvement effort.”
He also noted his work on such local efforts as improvements to the C.W. Clarke Park in Shandon and expansion of improvements in downtown San Miguel, as well as wider cooperative efforts with other counties and agencies, including working with Monterey County to fight quagga mussels, invasive freshwater mollusks that clog water-supply lines.
Mecham also has focused on improved cooperation between the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and the CHP to increase the law enforcement presence in North County.
In addition, the supervisor instituted expanded office hours for his constituents by going to various communities he represents on a weekly basis and making himself available.
Mecham has no announced opposition.
Two other supervisors are running for re-election next year: Jim Patterson in the Fifth District and Adam Hill in the Third District.
Neither has any formal opposition, although Debbie Arnold, an aide to State Sen. Sam Blakeslee, is considering a run against Patterson, and Pismo Beach City Councilman Ed Waage has said he might run against Hill.
