  If you happen to live in a neighborhood that’s reasonably close to Cal Poly, you may think partying and puking are the curriculum of choice for students. And while it’s true that the National Institutes of Health has found that adolescent brains don’t really evolve a sense of sound judgment until the mid-20s, Poly really can’t claim the dubious distinction of being known as a party school.

  Not only is the university one of the toughest public institutions to get into because of its “learn-by-doing” job placement record after graduation, but it also accepts only the best and brightest.

  Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong has announced the university will implement a fee that students recently supported in an advisory vote and that the California State University chancellor has since approved.

  Tuition costs at Cal Poly will nearly double in a span of six years if students vote today for a proposed fee increase and the decision is upheld by the California State University chancellor.

  Cal Poly students will cast ballots electronically on a mandatory fee for all students that would increase tuition by $160 per quarter, effective in the fall.

  If implemented, the phased-in plan would top out at $260 more per quarter in fall 2014.

  Cal Poly students will vote Feb. 29 on whether to increase their fees by nearly $1,000 in three years.

  According to the university's website, the fees would provide more money for classes, laboratories and support services to help students graduate on time.

  One of the biggest complaints among students in recent years has been their inability to enroll in the classes they need because those classes fill up to maximum enrollment capacity. That typically forces them to wait until another quarter to take the course.

  It’s easy to see why Cal Poly officials are proposing a new “student success fee” that would eventually generate $14 million per year for the university. Just look at the numbers: In the late 1980s, state support accounted for 90 percent of the university’s revenue. That’s since dwindled to 41 percent.

  And it could get worse: If Gov. Brown’s tax increase proposal doesn’t pass in November, Cal Poly could lose an additional $11 million.

  Faced with those grim statistics, Cal Poly is looking at a new fee that would be phased in over three years: $160 per quarter starting this fall; $210 per quarter in fall 2013; and $260 per quarter beginning in fall, 2014. The fee will be put to an advisory vote of the student body on Feb. 29.
