Prep Football Roundup: Arroyo Grande's Owens shows his range in win over Templeton

Garrett Owens did a little bit of everything for Arroyo Grande High on Friday night.

The all-purpose senior caught 10 passes for 123 yards with a touchdown, went 5 for 5 on extra points and last — but not least — nailed a 57-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

It was with the performance from Owens — who is verbally committed to Air Force — that Arroyo Grande (2-1) was able to cruise to a 45-17 win over the Eagles, the team’s second straight win since dropping its season opener to Lompoc 38-28.

“We didn’t perform well at all,” Templeton coach Dan Loney said of his team’s first loss of the season. “We came out and we just flat out didn’t perform. The players know it. Take nothing away from A.G., but I think we could have played them much better than we did.”

Templeton (2-1) allowed 404 yards of total offense to Arroyo Grande. Quarterback Brent VanderVeen was a big part of those numbers, passing for 282 with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Quillen Smith in the first quarter and another 27-yard touchdown pass to Owens in the second.

Arroyo Grande added three more scores in the third quarter before Templeton’s Matt Arace found paydirt on a 44-yard run — the team’s only touchdown. He led the team in rushing, gaining 138 on 18 carries.

Atascadero 34, Independence 6

Logan Sprouse’s two touchdowns over 60 yards led the Greyhounds to the nonleague win in Bakersfield.

Atascadero jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first quarter behind touchdowns on Joshua Osorio’s 3-yard run and Sprouse’s 67-yard punt return, and the Falcons never threatened to make a comeback.

Sprouse caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Robert Berwick in the third quarter to extend the lead to 27-0.

Berwick was 8 for 18 with 158 yards to lead the Atascadero (2-1) air attack.

Preston Hodges had 138 rushing yards, 86 passing yards and a passing touchdown for Independence (0-3). Johnny Moore had 55 receiving yards.

Carpinteria 24, Nipomo 13

The Titans’ Chris Souza ran in a 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 28-yard run in the third, but Nipomo (0-3) still came out on the losing end.

Souza led Nipomo on the ground with 102 yards on 17 carries.

Bishop Diego 33, Mission Prep 14

The Royals (2-1) rallied late but couldn’t overcome a 30-7 halftime deficit on the road.

Quarterback Tyler Baty had a 34-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Joey Hall in the third quarter, and Pat Laird punched in a 2-yard touchdown run in the second.

“Mistakes put us in a hole and made it difficult to come out of, although our defense did well with interceptions,” Mission Prep coach Chad Henry said.

Baty finished the game 23-of-39 passing with three interceptions and 195 yards.

Fillmore 24, Morro Bay 15

The Pirates fell to 0-2 on the season.
