It looks like Nick Carless is on his way back to San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly has its next men’s tennis coach.
According to multiple sources close to Cal Poly athletics who requested anonymity because the contract has yet to be finalized, Carless is set to take over the team he once earned All-Big West honors with as a player.
An assistant at Pepperdine for the past six seasons, Carless has accepted the job, sources said, and could be introduced in the coming days as the full-time replacement for former coach Justin McGrath, who resigned this summer amidst an NCAA investigation into the Mustangs program.
In three seasons playing at Cal Poly, Carless was an all-conference second-team selection for two of them.
With Cal Poly returning local star Andre Dome for his junior season and the team getting back former No. 1 player Matthew Fawcett from injury, there is potential for the men to have another big season. The Mustangs were awarded their first at-large berth to the NCAA Division I men’s tennis tournament this past season.
