The San Luis Obispo County Animal Services shelter is once again overflowing with animals that need homes, so it’s reminding pet owners to spay or neuter pets, microchip and tag them, and make sure they’re secured in homes and yards.
The shelter is also urging those who lose pets to check the shelter first. If they’re not there, give a description of the pet to the volunteer staff and check back with staff regularly. Also, the shelter asks that pet owners who can no longer care for their pets try to find a home for them with family, friends or through an ad before turning them in to the shelter.
In the meantime, to reduce its pet population quickly, cats and kittens will be available for adoption at half-price Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lemos Feed & Pet Supply at Broad and Orcutt streets in San Luis Obispo. Some small dogs will also be available for adoption.
“Take your pick of adorable felines like Oscar,’’ said volunteer Ellen Perryess. “Oscar’s owner brought him and his littermates to the shelter, and each has been hoping for a home ever since. Oscar’s adoption fee includes neuter surgery, a cardboard carrier, shots and microchip.”
COAST 101.3 will be broadcasting live from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Sandprints photographer Charlotte Rushton will be creating free 5x7-inch pet-and-people portraits.
In addition, existing pet owners will be able to bring their cat in a carrier or dog on a leash to the event to obtain a $30 microchip ID tag or ID tag for their collar.

The adoption fee is $75 for cats and $100 for dogs, plus a $20 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, basic vaccinations, microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, new collar and ID tag and carrier for cats.
