Suspect in Arroyo Grande carjacking is arrested in Utah

A man who Arroyo Grande police say tried to carjack a Santa Maria woman at knifepoint on Sept. 6 was arrested Tuesday in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Police said Frank Mason, a 27-year-old transient, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail but did not have additional details about his arrest, according to a news release. He remained in jail there this afternoon.

According to police, Mason was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and a narcotics offense. Mason, whose last check-in location for his parole was in Porterville, had removed his GPS ankle bracelet.

Mason has an outstanding arrest warrant from California and a separate arrest warrant for a probation violation from North Carolina, according to the news release.

Last week, police reported an attempted carjacking had taken place along South Elm Street between Farroll Avenue and The Pike about 10 p.m.

According to police, a man opened the passenger door of a 25-year-old woman’s 1996 Toyota Corolla after she had pulled over to pick up her cell phone, which she had dropped on the driver-side floor.

The woman cut her hand when she grabbed the man’s knife, police said. She told police that the man grabbed her hair and slammed her head into the driver-side window after she screamed at the man to get out of her car.

Police said that the woman drove away after she broke free from the man’s grasp and he ran away. Authorities did not disclose the woman’s name to protect her safety, Cmdr. John Hough said today.
