The Cal Poly volleyball team lost in three sets at No. 16 Oregon on Tuesday night, falling 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 in Eugene.
After the Ducks (7-1) won a competitive first set, the Mustangs (4-7) gave them all they could handle in the second in a set that featured 10 ties and seven lead changes.

Cal Poly held leads of 10-5 and 21-18, but Oregon fought back and held on for the close victory.
The Mustangs were led by Jennifer Keddy, who tallied nine kills, Kate Walters, who had 18 assists, and Lauren Law who led Cal Poly with 16 digs.
Megan McConnell had five kills, and Kristina Graven had four for Cal Poly, which is at San Francisco today.
FOOTBALL
Langford earns national honor
Cal Poly placekicker James Langford was named national placekicker of the week in the Football Championship Subdivision for his performance in the Mustangs’ loss at Montana on Saturday.
Langford, a sophomore, was 3 for 3 on field goals against the Grizzlies, including a career-long 50-yard field goal in the third quarter that gave Cal Poly a 23-21 lead.
Long earns Mountain West weekly honors
San Diego State’s Jerome Long, a 2008 Morro Bay High School grad, earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors Tuesday for his career-best 10 tackle performance in a 23-20 win at Army against Army on Saturday.
The Aztecs senior nose tackle also had a career- high seven solo tackles, including a key fourth-quarter sack that pushed the Black Knights out of field goal range on their final drive of the game.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Awich set to join Cal Poly
Joel Awich, a 6-foot-7 forward from Tartan High School in Maplewood Minn., is the final addition to the Cal Poly men’s basketball team for the 2011-12 season.
“Joel is a perfect fit for the Cal Poly basketball program: he’s a great student, a great person and a versatile athlete,” Mustangs head coach Joe Callero said in a statement.
“He has the skill to guard all five positions. He’s an excellent shot-blocker and can really run the floor.”
Awich registered 13 double-digit scoring outings last year and led the his high school team in rebounding, earning all-conference recognition while leading Tartan to the 2010-11 Minnesota Class 4A Section championship game.
BASEBALL
Armendariz named MVP of Corvallis Knights
Cal Poly sophomore outfielder David Armendariz has been named the most valuable player of the Corvallis Knights during the summer season.
Armendariz hit .289 over 204 at-bats with 12 doubles and 14 stolen bases and was tied for the team lead in RBI with Oregon State’s Ryan Gorton at 28.
He also led the Knights to their second West Coast Collegiate Baseball League title with a .300 hitting performance with two triples in the playoffs.
