The Cal Poly volleyball team earned a split Saturday at the Middle Tennessee Tournament, falling in four sets in the first match to
No. 4 Illinois before rallying to sweep host Middle Tennessee in the second match.
The win over Middle Tennessee was the first for new Cal Poly head coach Caroline Walters who took over last week when former coach Jon Stevenson was removed from the position by athletic director Don Oberhelman. Cal Poly had started the season 3-1 and the loss to Illinois was the Mustangs’ fifth straight.
The Mustangs (4-6) put up a fight in their loss to the Illini, falling 25-17, 26-28, 25-16, 27-25. The fourth set featured eight ties and five lead changes.
Kristina Graven led Cal Poly with 24 kills and added two aces and six digs. Kate Walters had 29 assists, and Shannon Garrett had 17 for the Mustangs.
Against the Blue Raiders, Cal Poly swept 25-22, 25-17, 25-20, led again by Graven and Catie Smith, who each tallied 11 kills. Walters netted 29 assists, and Lauren Law led the Mustangs with 12 digs.
Middle Tennessee featured Ashley Adams, a former San Luis Obispo High standout and two-time Tribune County Player of the Year. She led the Blue Raiders with 12 kills.
CROSS COUNTRY
UC Irvine Invitational
Cal Poly dominated the competition at the Anteater Recreation Center Course in Irvine, placing all five scoring runners in the top 15 and four in the top eight, finishing with a team total of 38 points.
Asuza Pacific finished second (59), and Long Beach State third (106).
Leanne Fogg was the top Cal Poly finisher, placing second with a time of 17 minutes 29.0 seconds on the 5K course. Vanessa Hancock finished sixth (17:45.0), Meghan Breadmore finished seventh (17:47.0) and Savannah Pio (17:47.8) placed eighth for the Mustangs.
The individual winner was Lauren Jaimison from Azusa Pacific in 17:20.4.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
Cerritos 14, Cuesta 8; Cuesta 13, Ohlone 6
The Cougars (3-1) earned a split in the second and final day of their own Central Coast Water Polo Tournament.
In game one against Cerritos, Cuesta was shut out in the first quarter and could not recover. Erin Casey and Carly Glogovac had two goals apiece for the Cougars.
It was Cuesta shutting out its opponent in the first quarter in game two, outscsoring Ohlone 6-0 en route to a big win. Julia Tatarian had three goals, Bailey Kelley, Erin Hasenkamp and Amanda Brown had two each, and four other Cougars had one goal.
