Range of events to honor 9/11

A number of events are planned throughout San Luis Obispo County this weekend to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Here is a listing.

Today

9/11 beacon lighting in commemoration of the victims of the World Trade Center attacks. Highlands Church, 215 Oak Hill Road, Paso Robles. Two beacons of light will be sent into the sky at 9 tonight, followed by a prayer and bagpipe tribute.

9/11 memorial concert by Symphony of the Vines, presenting Mozart’s “Requiem,” a world premiere of “Fanfare for 9/11” by concertmaster James Riccardo and “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber. Presentation of colors by a military color guard to acknowledge those who put their lives on the line to protect freedom. Tonight at 8 at the Templeton Performing Arts Center, 1200 S. Sunday

9/11 American Thunder 10th annual rally and barbecue. 1 to 3 p.m. Mitchell Park, San Luis Obispo. Featuring honor guard from Vandenberg Air Force Base; Charlie Hines, San Luis Obispo fire chief; and military veterans Hazel McNutt from World War II, John Stillwell from the Cold War, Dale Christensen from Vietnam, with concluding remarks by Marine Corps Maj. Brian Anderson, who is stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Bring items to donate to troops and their families, or monetary donations for groups that assist servicemen and women. 9/11 at 10: Interfaith worship service of remembrance and hope, hosted by the San Luis Obispo Ministerial Association and Central Coast Clergy and Laity for Justice. 3 p.m. First Presbyterian Church, 981 Marsh St., San Luis Obispo. Participants will represent the interfaith religious community, Cal Poly, and various levels of government and include San Luis Obispo Mayor Jan Marx, Rep. Lois Capps, Sheriff Ian Parkinson, Cal Poly religious studies professor Stephen Lloyd-Moffett, Rabbi Scott Corngold, Dr. Rushdi Abdul-Cader and the Rev. Jane Voigts.

Discussion series on the impact of 9/11 in the community. Mount Carmel Lutheran Church multipurpose room, 1701 Fredericks St., San Luis Obispo. 544-2133.

• 10 a.m. Sunday: “9/11 — impact on interfaith religions,” presented by Cal Poly professor Stephen Lloyd-Moffett.

• 10 a.m. Sept. 18: “9/11 — impact on the Muslim community at home and abroad,” by Dr. Abdul-Cader, emergency medical physician at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

• 10 a.m. Sept. 25: “9/11 — impact on our local community,” by Dan Krieger, emeritus professor of history at Cal Poly.

10th annual 9/11 memorial service, art show and concert. Artwork commemorating 9/11 and patriotism will be on display from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Ramona Garden Park, 993 Ramona Ave., Grover Beach. Memorial from 1 to 2 p.m. to honor the victims and families of the terrorist attacks, as well as victims of terrorism throughout the world. 473-4580.

9/11 ceremony and barbecue hosted by Sons of the American Legion Post No. 432. 6:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building flag stand, 1000 Main St., Cambria. Patriotic songs launch the brief event. Mac Van Duzer is to sing the national anthem. Representatives from the Sheriff’s Department, fire departments, Cambria Community Healthcare District and other first-responder agencies will be honored while standing in for their peers who died during and after the attacks. Glow sticks will be provided. Free hot dog and burger barbecue will follow.

Memorial service to honor those who have served and those who have died for their country. 10 a.m. Laguna Lake Golf Course, 11175 Los Osos Valley Road, San Luis Obispo. A short flag service and a tribute to longtime American Legion member and one of the founders of this memorial service, Bob Bryn. Cookies and punch will be served.
