Prep Roundup: Nipomo rolls in boys water polo opener

The Nipomo High boys water polo team got off to a strong start Thursday afternoon, defeating Pioneer Valley 15-0.

The Titans came into this season looking to build upon last year, when they had the best run in program history, advancing to the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

Nipomo, which started this year ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll released Aug. 22, effectively put Thursday’s game out of reach early, getting out to a 9-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Cole Holloway, Marc Baker and Kirk Wilenius, each of whom were leaders a year ago, carried that momentum into the season opener. Holloway scored four goals, and Baker added three while Wilenius was flawless in goal.

San Luis Obispo 15, Morro Bay 10

The visiting Pirates entered the fourth quarter trailing 9-7 before San Luis Obispo outpaced Morro Bay 6-3 to clinch the win.

Juan Olade Armendariz and D.J. Marcy each had a game-high four goals for Morro Bay (0-2).

Chase Anderson led a balanced San Luis Obispo (1-1) attack with three goals. Nine different Tigers scored at least one goal.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Mission Prep 3, Nipomo 0

The host Royals swept the Titans 25-21, 25-20, 25-15. Mission Prep handed Nipomo its first loss on the season.

Sadie Casacca had 10 digs, eight kills and two aces for the Royals (2-1), Jesa Culver added 14 digs and five aces and Shannon Dudley had 24 assists and two aces.

Sarah Stahl had 11 kills, and Taylor Nevitt had six kills for Nipomo (2-1).

San Luis Obispo 3, Santa Maria 0

The visiting Tigers swept the Saints 25-7, 25-15, 25-8.

Molly Maguire led San Luis Obispo (3-0) with five kills, Maggie Eppright had 14 assists and Erin Good had 13 digs.

Paso Robles 3, Cabrillo 1

The Bearcats (3-0) won 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21 in the nonleague match.

Paso Robles was led by Molly Donovan’s 15 kills and three blocks, and Jackie Caraveo’s 12 digs and four aces.

Atascadero 3, Lompoc 0

Kendall Featherstone had six kills and six aces as the Greyhounds (3-0) won 25-13, 25-10, 25-24.

Brittany Davis led Atascadero with 14 kills to go with her four aces, and Haley Ogden 20 assists.

Frontier 3, Arroyo Grande 0

The Eagles (2-1) lost 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.

Alyssa Koenig had 12 kills, while Madison Jacobs had five kills and five blocks for Arroyo Grande.

Righetti 3, Morro Bay 1

The Warriors edged the Pirates 25-22, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23.

Carli Watt and Tia Gacad each had 12 kills in the losing effort. Kylie Gacad supplied 37 assists for Morro Bay (0-3).

Templeton 3, St. Joseph 1

The Eagles won 25-19, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14.

Jeanine Madson led the Eagles with 17 kills, Sydney Roth had 32 assists and 15 digs and Heather Fields had six kills for Templeton (3-0).

GIRLS TENNIS

Paso Robles 13, Templeton 5

Maria Petiy and Caraline Redburg both swept in singles as the Bearcats pushed past Templeton.

Redburg won 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and Petiy won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 for Paso Robles (1-0).

In doubles, Laura Callahan and Kylie Pug won 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, while Riley Carana and Amanda Keller won 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

San Luis Obispo 16, Mission Prep 2

Ricquel Santos and Sophie Side won in doubles 6-3, and Rusana Cannell won in singles 6-1 for Mission Prep’s only wins.

Orcutt Academy 14, Nipomo 4

Lauren Kueffler won two singles sets for Nipomo, which also got singles wins from Kelly Barrett and Rachael Moody.

GIRLS GOLF

Morro Bay 245, San Luis Obispo 248

Jennifer Baltimore medaled with a 41, and the Pirates defeated the Tigers (1-2) at the 9-hole, par-35 Morro Bay Golf Course.

Nora Takaria led San Luis Obispo with a 42.

Paso Robles 261, Nipomo 297

Ashley Levandusky shot a 9-hole 44 to lead the Bearcats to the team win at the 9-hole, par-36 Hunter Ranch Golf Course.

Ashley Ruiz led Nipomo with a personal-best 52.
