Arroyo Grande police report that someone tried to carjack a Santa Maria woman at knifepoint along South Elm Street between Farroll Avenue and The Pike late Tuesday night.
Just before 10 p.m., a man opened the passenger door of the 25-year-old woman’s car after she had pulled over to pick up her cell phone, which she had dropped on the driver-side floor, according to an Arroyo Grande Police Department news release Wednesday night.

The woman reportedly cut her hand when she grabbed the man’s knife, police said. She told police that the man grabbed her hair and slammed her head into the driver-side window after she screamed at the man to get out of her car.
Police said that the woman drove away after she broke free from the man’s grasp and he ran away.
Authorities did not disclose the woman’s name or what kind of car she was driving.
The woman told police her attacker was a white man, about 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighing about 175 pounds. He was described as having a very-short buzz haircut and a scruffy beard, wearing dark clothes.
She also told police that he had “a very foul odor from his body and breath,” and appeared to have missing or jagged front teeth and eyebrows that were either painted on, or enhanced by tattoos.
