Local authorities reported that they arrested 143 people on suspicion of driving drunk or on drugs in San Luis Obispo County during the Labor Day Holiday weekend.
That’s up a bit from the 114 arrests reported for last year’s holiday weekend, according to a Wednesday news release.
The arrests were part of the Avoid the 14 campaign, referring to the seven city police departments, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies participating in the anti-drunken-driving effort.
Local agencies increased enforcement efforts starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday through midnight on Monday evening, according to the news release.
No one was killed locally in an alcohol-related crash during this year’s Labor Day weekend, where last year there was one death, according to authorities.
The Avoid the 14 program is financed with a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant administered by the state Office of Traffic Safety.
