Prep Roundup: Arroyo Grande sweeps Mission Prep in volleyball

The Arroyo Grande High girls volleyball team swept Mission Prep on Tuesday night, winning 25-18, 25-7, 25-16. After a tight first game, The Eagles (2-0) used five team aces to dominate Game 2 against the Royals (1-1).

“We served the ball really well in that game,” Arroyo Grande coach Ernie Santa Cruz said. “We got them out of their rhythm. That was the difference.” The Eagles cruised from there.

Kendall VandenBerg had six kills and five aces, Alyssa Koenig had six kills and Danielle Mullery had five. Libero Savanna Welch had 20 digs. “We spread the ball out,” Santa Cruz said. “We try to serve tough and play good defense and not rely on one person.”

The Eagles have not lost a game in either match this season.

“We could still play better; it’s a whole new team from last year. I think we can be a lot better,” Santa Cruz said. “Today we improved on our game from last week, and that is what’s important.”

For Mission Prep, Sadie Casacca had nine kills, five digs and an ace, Grace Ready had 15 digs and four kills, and Shannon Dudley had 24 assists, two blocks and three digs.

San Luis Obispo 3, Morro Bay 0

Behind Elizabeth Culpepper (11 kills) and Jessica Chellsen (seven kills, nine aces), the Tigers (2-0) cruised to a home victory over the Pirates (0-2), sweeping 25-21, 25-10, 25-17.

Maggie Eppright added 25 assists for San Luis Obispo, and Linnea Ramirez had a team-best 12 digs.

Atascadero 3, Cabrillo 0

The Greyhounds had 18 aces as they cruised past Cabrillo 25-10, 25-9, 25-14.

Kendall Featherstone had five aces and six kills, Brittany Davis had four aces with 11 kills, and Haley Ogden had three aces with her 21 assists.

For Atascadero (2-0), Mary Kate Evans also had three aces and five kills.

Paso Robles 3, Lompoc 0

The Bearcats downed Lompoc 25-7, 25-7, 25-13.

Molly Donovan had eight kills, Kaylee Warren had five kills and four aces, and Kellie Reynolds had four assists for Paso Robles (2-0).

Nipomo 3, Coast Union 2

The Titans (2-0) held on for a narrow victory over the Broncos (0-2), winning 17-25, 25-16, 27-25, 14-25, 15-12.

Stephanie Persky had 10 kills, Missi Ramsey had nine kills, Cristina Ozzimo had 34 assists, and Sarah Stahl had 14 digs for Nipomo.

For Coast Union, Karla Soto had nine kills, five aces and seven digs, Katelyn Lorenz had eight kills, and Sophie Flemion had 33 assists. The Broncos have lost in five sets in back-to-back matches to start the season.

Templeton 3, Pioneer Valley 0

The Eagles swept the Panthers 25-17, 25-17, 25-16. No other information was provided.

GIRLS TENNIS

Atascadero 16, Templeton 2

Amber Petersen led the way for Greyhounds (3-0), sweeping 6-0, 6-0 before being subbed out.

Mallory Miller finished 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, and Sidney Sima won 5-0 (retired), 6-2, 6-3 for Atascadero. In doubles, Rhiannon Dudley and Claire Jacobs won 6-0, 6-0 before being subbed for Bailey Taunt and Amanda Terry, who also won 6-0. Lauryn Cooper and Jackie Wulff won 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), and Kelly Boicourt and Erin Morey won 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

Arroyo Grande 18, Nipomo 0

Freshman Sophie Whittle swept her two matches 6-0, 6-0 as the Eagles downed the Titans in their season opener.

Lauren Hayashi (6-0, 6-0) and Alex Mero (6-4, 6-0) also both won their two matches for Arroyo Grande.

In doubles, Stephani Domako and Amber Domako won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, Brianna Flood and Joanne Phung won 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, and Maurisa Dominguez and Alexis Flood won 6-2, 6-0.

GIRLS GOLF

San Luis Obispo 265, Orcutt Academy 299

The Tigers’ Sam Lopez was the medalist after carding a 43 at par-35 Rancho Maria Golf Course for nine holes.

Also for San Luis Obispo (1-1), Anna Talmage shot 52, Sam Tsau shot 53, and both Tatuih Campos and Amy Baker carded 54.
