New eatery set to sprout on Garden St.

Tim and Liz Begovich, the owners of Seaside Café in Shell Beach, are bringing their homemade comfort food to Garden Street in San Luis Obispo.

They have signed a two-year lease with a two-year extension option to open Garden Street Café at 1129-A Garden St., the former home of the Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop, which moved nearby to a space off San Luis Obispo Creek.

Garden Street Café will offer breakfast, lunch and desserts, including more than 10 types of cupcakes each day. It will be a “European-style café where someone might get cappuccino and a slice of cake at night,” Tim said.

The 700-square foot café will have about 60 seats, including patio seating. It will eventually be part of the Garden Street Terraces — a hotel, commercial, retail space and residential condo project proposed for that block.

The Begoviches opened Seaside Café in 2006, and sales have grown 20 percent year over year since 2007, allowing the couple to fund their second café without financing, they said. Tim Begovich declined to disclose the cost of their new café venture or annual revenues.

Garden Street Cafe will have approximately 10 employees. Seaside Café currently has four.

Garden Street is also home to Linnaea’s, which offers coffee, desserts, breakfast and lunch specializing in vegetarian and vegan dishes. The Begoviches do not see Linnaea’s as competition.

“We’re completely different in every aspect,” Liz said.

The Begoviches describe their cuisine as American nouveau: “Classic American items with a gourmet spin,” Liz said.

Due to delays in construction improvements and city permitting, the Begoviches cannot yet announce an opening date.
