Animal shelter volunteer Ellen Perryess shared the following recently:
“Happy dog and cat stories are the best. They’re what keep volunteers coming back to the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter. Last month, Pet Tales readers fueled some revitalizing stories.
“Reader donations to the shelter’s ARF fund made Cleo’s surgery possible. Her biopsy indicated she’s cancer free, which resulted in Cleo finding a home. Additionally, the donations exceeded Cleo’s surgery costs, so Spencer’s suspicious lump can now be removed.
“And Spencer’s worth it. He’s the epitome of the devoted Labrador retriever. Spencer’s first love is people. He bonds to those who care for him and loves to meet and greet. Spencer leans appreciatively against people and enjoys any attention he gets.
“Spencer’s been around toddlers and has shown great tolerance and care. In the house, he is a gentleman and a quiet shadow.
“Due to shelter overcrowding, Spencer’s in foster care and has proven he knows his basic commands, takes treats gently, is housebroken and gets along fine with other dogs.
“Spencer will have his surgery soon, and the outcome will hopefully be like Cleo: a happy one resulting in a home.
“Thanks to all who donate to the ARF fund. You’re lifesavers.
“The 2012 Love ’em 13-month wall calendar celebrates all the dogs and cats of the SLO County Animal Shelter. The majority of the photos and stories are of Pet Tales’ alumni, and each featured pet has found a home.
“Help keep pets from becoming homeless by purchasing a Love ’em wall calendar. All proceeds go to ongoing community education to reduce the number of dogs and cats coming to the shelter.

The adoption fee is $75 for cats and $100 for dogs, plus a $20 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents.
The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, basic vaccinations, microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, new collar and ID tag and a carrier for cats.
