Postmaster Gerry Kalars last day at the Cambria Post Office is today. She will begin her new job as Templeton postmaster on Monday, taking over for Sandra Dooley, who moved up to the Los Osos postmaster slot.
Kalar, 55, began her U.S. Postal Service career in San Miguel in 1981 and was postmaster in Santa Margarita before taking the Cambria job in Cambria in May 2003, replacing Jeff Musial.
She said she really enjoyed working in Cambria, but the new position is closer to her Paso Robles home. Kalar added that she hopes Cambrians will stop by and say hello at the office on Main Street in Templeton.
In her eight years here, Kalar said, one of the most noticeable changes has been a decline in the number of post office box rentals. She attributes the decline to the change in use of many Cambria homes from second homes to vacation rentals.
Cambria still rents approximately 1,000 post office boxes, and has approximately 5,000 other delivery addresses split up between six rural and one city route stretching from Harmony to Ragged Point, and east on Highway 46.
The Cambria office has 17 employees working out of 4100 Bridge St.
Taking over for Kalar on an interim basis is Cayucos Postmaster Brian Machado, who has previously filled that role.
