If Dominique Johnson is the next former Cal Poly football player to become a contributor in the NFL, it doesn’t appear it will be with the Minnesota Vikings.
After two preseason games, the Vikings on Wednesday waived the undrafted receiver, who they signed in the early hours of free agency following the end of the lockout.

Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound former UCLA transfer, was with the Vikings for two preseason games but did not register a catch in either a 14-3 loss Aug. 14 to the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, Tenn., or a 20-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle on Saturday.
Johnson is now free to sign with another team or could be brought back to join the practice squad when the season starts.
The cut leaves three other former Mustangs still attached to NFL rosters. Linebacker Chris Gocong is in his second year starting with the Cleveland Browns, receiver Ramses Barden has yet to get off the New York Giants’ physically unable to perform list and safety Mark Restelli has one tackle and one pass deflection in two preseason games with the Miami Dolphins.
In two seasons with Cal Poly, Johnson had 90 catches for 1,375 yards and 10 touchdowns, more than double the receiving numbers of any Mustangs player during the span.
In his best game, Johnson passed Barden to become the program’s all-time single-game record-holder with five touchdowns in a 50-48 loss to South Dakota in 2009 when he also caught 13 passes for 273 yards.
