Morro Bay officials will hold a public meeting Tuesday to discuss the citys bicycle and pedestrian plan, a document that makes the city eligible for federal recreation grants.
The meeting will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Morro Bay. A draft of the plan will be available from the citys website by Friday, said Barry Rands, associate engineer with the city.
The plan will outline how the city plans to improve walking and cycling opportunities. Anyone who enjoys walking and biking in Morro Bay should participate, Rands said.
The city is pursuing grants for several recreation improvement projects. One is a pedestrian bridge over Morro Creek at the Embarcadero.
The city applied for but did not receive a grant of about $500,000 from the National Scenic Byways program to obtain the designs and permits for the project. The city plans to apply again next year.
We are still talking about something five years down the road, Rands said.
Another project is installation of sidewalks on Greenwood Avenue, a key route for children traveling to and from Del Mar Elementary School. This grant for nearly $1 million would make Greenwood the only street in that neighborhood with sidewalks on both sides of the street.
Rands recently applied for a grant for the project from the federal Safe Routes to School program. He is waiting to hear whether the application has been approved.
The bicycle and pedestrian plan must be updated every five years to meet state and federal requirements. All projects proposed in the plan would require separate approval and funding from the City Council.
