Emotions in print

Dan Rich, in his Aug. 14 letter, decries the name-calling in our political processes.

It is easy to see why when you analyze only two days of letters printed recently. Those who belong to the “civil,” “tolerant” and “compassionate” party use these terms to advance intelligent debate: Ignorance. Blind obstinacy.

Racist. Extremist. Pushy. Type A. Aggressive. Arrogance. Sabotaging. Destructive. Clowns.

These words are applied to fellow Americans whose opinions differ from the writers’ — Americans who want the feds to behave as a responsible family does by living within their means and obeying the law.

Dan, you are going to have to give up reading the letters as long as your fellow Democrats are getting their emotions printed, instead of any ideas.

Two questions

In response to Wayne Robert’s letter, “Pismo Paradise lost,” Tribune, Aug. 17:

Wayne, I understand how ideal you remember your lives were in the 1940s and ’50s. I have two questions:

1. Where should all of the people (in excess of the 1,900 who lived here in 1950) live now, instead of here?

2. What, and by whom, should be done to the people who now, or did previously, own the property in the original city limits that, according to your letter, is in “a state of ruin”?

Don’t be mad at me

I would like to wish the large man, in the large SUV with the Arizona license plates, peace and enlightenment.

I would also like for your children riding in the car, watching their father scream and flip me off, to know that there is still hope for them in this world.

You vacationers need to know that it is perfectly legal for anyone to ride a bike in the bike lane.

In fact, it is just as legal for us cyclists to be on the road as it is for you to be there in your big truck. Don’t hate on me because I choose to be healthy in the sun. Be angry at the war or the economy, not at those of us taking advantage of the beautiful day.

Congress we chose

What’s with all the angry Letters to the Editor complaining about a “my way or the highway” majority in Congress that refuses to compromise and collaborate so problems can actually get solved?

Voters were given a choice in 2010 and this Congress is exactly what they chose. Now they’re unhappy? Like a silk purse and a sow’s ear, you can’t get pragmatic results out of ideologue extremists.

If people want a collaborative, problem-solving Congress working for the American people, they’ll have to elect one.

Quality of life

The article on Aug. 14 about Pismo’s new growth plan amazed me.

I cannot understand why any governmental agency would approve this expansion. We are told that in San Luis Obispo County, there are thousands of homes in foreclosure, and many more for sale.

Furthermore, we are constantly reminded that the shortage of water in our area is a major concern. There are already the problems of deteriorating streets and traffic congestion.

Why ruin the quality of life by building more houses in light of these concerns?
