  The hoodie problem

  Thank you, Geraldo Rivera. Let me tell you why I’m indebted to Geraldo Rivera. You see, I may very well owe my life to him. According to Geraldo, chances are Trayvon Martin lost his life because he was a black male wearing a hoodie in a predominantly white neighborhood. So, thank you, Geraldo; now that I know this, I know how dangerous it is for me as a black male to continue to wear a hoodie in my predominantly white neighborhood here on the Central Coast.

  But there’s a problem. First, I’ve got three hoodies and hate to give them up. I like all three. Each of them has a particular significance. One is a Stanford University hoodie, one is a The Citadel hoodie and one is a Pismo Beach hoodie. One of our daughters got two degrees from Stanford, another daughter got a graduate degree from The Citadel and the third, well, it’s Pismo Beach.

  Discard drugs safety

  The members of the San Luis Obispo County Health Commission commend and recognize all seven city police departments and the three sheriff’s substations for their willingness to act as convenient drop off points for Operation Medicine Cabinet. This nonprofit program provides our residents with convenient locations to safely dispose of unwanted medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, at no charge.

  Hold the bashing

  In my opinion, Gary Stitch hit the nail on the head in his Feb. 3 letter (“Bashing the other”) when he asked the question, “Does every issue have to include vitriol on both sides?”

  It seems to me that our nation is growing more and more politically apart, and every commentator, whether a politician, columnist or even a letters to the editor writer, feels compelled to verbally annihilate anyone who might express a contrary opinion.

  March on D.C.

  Joe Tarica gave a fair overview of the “Occupy” movement (“Joetopia,” Nov. 5). He pointed out that our nation has the “most carefully conceived and balanced political system in the history of the world.” He reasoned that most people are reacting against the greed and cronyism which are eroding the democratic values that form the foundation of our political system.

  It is my view that the protesters should be marching in front of the White House and Congress. The Democrats have their hands out to the union bosses and trial lawyers for money to run their multimillion-dollar campaigns, and the Republicans have their hands out to the industrial titans for the same purpose, and as a result the “little guy,” whom they are supposed to represent, gets shortchanged.

  Keep an open mind

  Thought-provoking letter from Steven Anderson (“We’re all atheists,” April 9). Years ago at Cal Poly, I had to take a “critical thinking” class. Far from being a waste of time, it was the class that I remember most vividly. We learned about reasoning that was logically defensible, as compared to reasoning that was not (fallacies in reasoning).

  I came out of the class thinking with more intelligence because I learned the difference between running my mouth (without a solid defense) and speaking coherently because what I had to say was rational.
