NOAA director to meet with fishermen in Morro Bay

Jane Lubchenco, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, will visit Morro Bay on Friday.

That morning she will meet with local commercial fishermen to discuss a newly implemented catch-share program. The controversial program applies to groundfish trawling and allocates a percentage of the allowable catch to individual fishermen and fishing companies.

Following her meeting with the fishermen, Lubchenco will take a boat tour of the Morro Bay harbor, said Jim Milbury, NOAA spokesman. She plans to leave in the afternoon. She is not planning any public events, Milbury said.
