The Santa Barbara Foresters defeated the Kenai (Alaska) Oilers 1-0 on Saturday in the National Baseball Congress World Series final, earning the team’s third national championship in Wichita, Kan.
The Foresters went 7-0 in the tournament and won their first national championship since 2008.

The Foresters scored the only run in the first inning, when center fielder Brett Vertigan came home on a groundout to second base.
Foresters starter Mitch Mormann pitched seven shutout innings and gave up four hits to grab the win, and Spenser Messmore pitched two shutout innings of relief to earn the save.
At the plate, Jeff McVaney was 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Foresters. Former Nipomo High standout Jeff McNeil went 1 for 4, and Vertigan went 1 for 2.
For the Oilers, current Cal Poly shortstop Mike Miller went 1 for 4 with a strikeout.
The Central Coast Basketball League will start Aug. 28 at Cuesta College.
Games will go through Oct. 30 for boys and girls in the fourth grade through varsity. The cost is $550 per team before Aug. 20 and $585 after that date.

The Arroyo Grande Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department will hold a fall adult basketball league, from Aug. 29 to Nov. 17, and a fall coed softball league on Sunday evenings from Sept. 7 through the end of November.
Those interested in basketball can register for any of the four divisions — upper, middle, lower and over 40 — on Aug. 23-27. The cost is $560 per team and an additional $8 per non-Arroyo Grande resident.
For softball, registration for the two divisions, middle and lower, begins Aug. 26 and costs $510 per team, plus $8 per non-Arroyo Grande resident.
