Four former Cal Poly track and field athletes are headed to Daegu, Korea, to compete in IAAF World Championships from Aug. 27 to Sept. 4.
The U.S. roster for the world meet was finalized and announced Wednesday.
On the women’s side, Stephanie Brown Trafton (discus), Maggie Vessey (800) and Sharon Day (heptathlon) will all be making their second straight world championship appearance after competing in the 2009 championships.
Brown Trafton and Day qualified for this year’s event by winning their events at the U.S. national meet in Eugene, Ore., in June and Vessey qualified with a runner-up finish in the 800.
On the men’s side, Ben Bruce will be appearing in his first world meet in the 3,000 steeplechase.
Bruce finished fifth at the U.S. meet, but ran a personal-record time of 8 minutes, 9.10 seconds in a meet in Barcelona, Spain, last month. Because several of the men who placed ahead of Bruce at the U.S. meet didn’t reach the A qualifying standard of 8:23.0 for the world meet, Bruce gets to go in their place because he achieved the standard.
