‘When seeing a kitten, the word ‘unwanted’ doesn’t usually pop to mind. But with banks of kennels full of kittens — tumbling, cuddling or stretching out a paw to be noticed — the word applies.
“Every summer, hundreds of unwanted kittens — whether stray or owner-surrendered, with mothers or orphaned — fill the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter.
“Sabrina, Samantha and Simon are orphans. These Maine coon mixes were 7 weeks old when they were found. They came to the shelter unsure whom they could trust. Fortunately, a shelter volunteer could foster and take them home, where they remembered how to play and appreciate loving hands.
“It’s hard to imagine these could be throw-aways, with their soft coats, black eyeliner and splashes of cream around pale green eyes — Simon a handsome tabby, Samantha a beautiful dilute tortoiseshell and Sabrina a lovely calico/tortie.
“This threesome, along with dozens of other spayed and neutered kittens, will be at the Kittenpalooza Adopt-A-Pet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday on the front lawn of the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter.
“Because adult and senior cats are often overlooked, the adoption fee at the Kittenpalooza for cats 1-year-old or older will be half off.
“Regardless of who captures your heart, your adopting from the San Luis Obispo County Animal Shelter helps not only the dog, cat or kitten that goes home with you but also the pet that needs that open kennel.”

The adoption fee is $75 for cats and $100 for dogs, plus a $20 county license fee for dogs if the adopters are San Luis Obispo County residents. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter, basic vaccinations, a microchip, eligibility for a free veterinarian check, a new collar and ID tag, and a carrier for cats.

SLO Buns Rabbit Rescue will host a bunny-adopt-a-thon from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Utopia Bakery at 2900 Broad St. in San Luis Obispo. Come to learn about the bunnies. Homemade crafts will be for sale, too.
