Shoppers gleefully arrived early and gained in numbers, packing the parking lot by midafternoon Wednesday to check out the new Target in San Luis Obispo.

Prior to the store’s opening, residents had to drive to Paso Robles or Santa Maria to shop at a Target. The 140,000-square-foot Target at Prefumo Creek Commons is part of a 16-acre development by Madonna Enterprises on Los Osos Valley Road across from Home Depot.

The project is expected to bring $500,000 to $600,000 into San Luis Obispo’s coffers in annual sales taxes, according to city staff estimates in 2009.
