In the third fatal collision in San Luis Obispo County in as many days, two people are dead and three others were taken to a hospital after a Sunday afternoon crash in Nipomo.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, which took place about 4:20 p.m. along Hutton Road in Nipomo — the frontage road in front of the Santa Maria Speedway — according to the CHP.

The crash took place after one of the vehicles “spun out of control” and collided with another vehicle, according to a medic at the scene.

The back of the car that apparently lost control, described by the medic as “literally torn apart” between the front and back doors, ended up in a strawberry field near a bend in the road off of Joshua Avenue, about 100 feet from its front end.

No information about the cause of the crash, or on the deceased or the people injured, was available as of late Sunday.

A medic taking two patients to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria affirmed in her radio dispatches to the hospital that two people were killed in the crash.

The medic radioed that she was taking a 58-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man to the hospital.

Another medic was taking a 39-year-old male passenger who walked away from the crash to Marian, despite his initial refusals of medical treatment.

Medics and doctors discussing the case in radio dispatches insisted he be hospitalized because a CHP Breathalyzer test found his blood-alcohol level was 0.22.

The man was a passenger in the car that “literally split in two,” according to the medic’s radio dispatches.

The crash affected traffic along southbound Highway 101 for a time, with the CHP conducting a traffic safety break at West Tefft Street in Nipomo after drivers observing the scene slowed to a crawl.

Previous crashes

On Saturday, a Fresno man died from injuries he suffered in an afternoon collision along Highway 46 near Paso Robles.

His 2007 Toyota Highlander was hit head-on by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 15-year-old from the Central Valley community of Avenal, according to the CHP.

The teen drove the SUV into opposing traffic lanes, the CHP said. Though the Fresno man — whose identity has not been disclosed — swerved to the right to try to avoid the Suburban, they collided in the shoulder, according to the CHP.

On Friday, two Northern California men were killed when their driver, who was allegedly drunk, crashed his car along Avila Beach Drive east of Cave Landing Road, according to the CHP.

Evan Green, 21, of Chico, driving a 2004 Saturn Vue, missed a leftward curve in the road, veered right, overcorrected and then flipped the car several times, the CHP said. The Saturn eventually crashed through a fence and landed on its roof near the Avila Beach Golf Resort.
