Local youngsters showed off their crafty side last week at the San Miguel Library as they unveiled two wildflower murals — part of a community project designed to teach them leadership and planning skills.
Paso Robles Junior Girl Scout Troop No. 40914 painted four murals to freshen up the San Miguel Library in San Miguel and Georgia Brown Elementary School in Paso Robles.

The 13 girls, from the fifth and sixth grades, voted on a project after brainstorming for ideas.
Then they chose the mural, planned its designs and solicited donations for materials from local businesses to create them.
“At first, it was a little difficult, but it was completely worth it,” 11-year-old Victoria Smeltzer of San Miguel said of the process.
The girls gave various reasons for liking the project.
For 11-year-old Blakelee Adams of Paso Robles, the perks were realizing she enjoyed drawing and working in a group.
Marina Smeltzer, 12, of Paso Robles agreed, saying that art allows people the flexibility “to be creative in your own way.”
Colorful poppies, irises, snapdragons and daises were among the flowers depicted for the library.
“With the library, I go in there practically every day, and I think I’ll be proud and happy that I did that,” Victoria Smeltzer said of helping.
Two additional murals will be installed later this month on a gazebo at Georgia Brown. They will show a painted waterfall and an underwater scene with mermaids and jellyfish.
The mural project helps the Scouts receive their bronze award, the highest achievement for Junior Girl Scouts.
