Diablo Canyon nuclear power plants operating record for 2010 will be the subject of a public meeting June 15 in San Luis Obispo.
The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with PG&E officials to discuss the plants annual performance assessment.
Thats a report card of its safety and operational record for the past year. The public can also ask questions and give feedback.
Each year, the NRC assesses the performance of all of the nations commercial nuclear power plants, said Elmo Collins, administrator of the NRC regional office in Arlington, Texas.
The agency concluded that overall, PG&E operated the plant safely in 2010.
The meeting is set for 6 to 9 p.m. at Embassy Suites at 333 Madonna Road.
One topic of conversation will be persistent difficulties plant personnel have in identifying problems and thoroughly assessing them. This is the third consecutive assessment in which this problem has been noted.
The agency said PG&E has made progress in addressing the issue. This includes completing a safety culture survey at the plant in February.
However, we continue to identify findings associated with the thoroughness of problem evaluation, especially in engineering evaluations, Geoffrey Miller, chief of the agencys reactor projects, said in a letter to PG&E. Based on the findings we continue to identify in this area, we concluded your actions to address the theme have not yet proven effective.
The agency plans to conduct inspections that specifically look at PG&Es progress in addressing the issue, Miller said. Two resident NRC inspectors are assigned full time to Diablo Canyon. They are supplemented, as needed, by inspection specialists from the regional office.
