The Creston community gathered Wednesday to celebrate the groundbreaking of its new fire station.
A ceremony was held with San Luis Obispo County 5th District Supervisor Jim Patterson at the rodeo grounds.

Rarig Construction Inc. of San Luis Obispo won the roughly $2.5 million bid for the work. The land cost an additional $185,000. Funding was obtained through the county.
The new County/Cal Fire station is needed because the existing station at 5110 Swayze St. doesn’t meet earthquake seismic requirements, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Chad Zrelak said.
Built in 1983, it consists of a two-bay garage with two mobile homes attached for office space and barracks.
The new 6,615-square-foot station is planned for a lot on Webster Road at Highway 41 East. Its design will focus on energy efficiency and earthquake safety.
The county intends to staff the new station seven days a week, but that depends on available funding and still needs to be authorized by the Board of Supervisors.
The current station has two paid personnel working Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Zrelak said, as well as 15 on-call firefighters.
The date construction is expected to wrap up was not available late Wednesday.
