Prep Roundup: Murillo, San Luis Obispo shut out Arroyo Grande in baseball

Marco Murillo scattered nine hits over nine shutout innings for San Luis Obispo High as the Tigers earned a 1-0 PAC 7 baseball win over Arroyo Grande on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers (7-5, 5-2) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the ninth with one out and the bases loaded when Dakota Wells hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring pinch runner Aiden Candelario from third.

Murillo gave up just one walk, intentionally, and struck out seven in a game where both starting pitchers went the distance.

Arroyo Grande’s Cal Poly-bound ace, Colton Haynes, gave up just two hits and struck out three in the complete-game loss for Arroyo Grande (11-4, 7-3).

“Pitching was the story of the game,” San Luis Obispo coach Bobby Ryan said. “Both pitchers going the distance in extra innings like that is incredible. Marco just had a remarkable game. Both sides played very well.”

Despite the loss, Arroyo Grande remained in first place in the league standings, one game ahead of Paso Robles.

Atascadero 4, Paso Robles 2

Bryce Evans pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out four in the win for the Greyhounds (7-5, 4-3 PAC 7).

Spencer Ruggles was 2 for 2 with a run scored, and Bryan Kirkpatrick was 1 for 2 with two RBI for Atascadero.

Morro Bay 16, Santa Maria 2

Keith Evans connected on a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, part of a 4-for-4, four-RBI performance to lead the Pirates (5-11, 2-4 Los Padres League) past the Saints.

Rico Caravalho was 3 for 3 with two RBI and a double, Sam LaBrecque was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a double, and Dan Moskowitz was 2 for 3 for the Pirates.

Dan Beavers gave up five hits, one earned run, and struck out eight in five innings.

Nick Settevendemie pitched a perfect two innings in relief with two strikeouts.

Cabrillo 12, Nipomo 2

Kenton Garl was 2 for 3 for the Titans (6-4, 4-1 LPL) in the loss to the Conquistadores, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest CIF-Southern Section Division 5 poll.

Both Marc Baker and Cole Holloway had tough days from the mound, giving up a combined 10 hits and nine walks while striking out six. Dominic Garcia and Tanner Autry had RBI singles for Nipomo.

Lompoc 8, Templeton 1

The Eagles fell to the 10th-ranked Braves. No further information was available.

North County Christian 4, Coast Union 0

Taylor Brard pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out four as the Crusaders (5-2, 2-1 Coast Valley League) won on the road.

Keelan Willison threw three no-hit innings to pick up the save for North County Christian.

Haustin Morrison was 3 for 3 with a double, one run scored and three stolen bases. Daniel Katches went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI as the two combined for five of the Crusaders’ eight hits.

It was the first league loss of the season for the Broncos (3-9, 3-1 CVL).

SOFTBALL

Righetti 6, Paso Robles 1

Despite going 3 for 4 with a home run and an RBI, Jenna Wookey couldn’t hold down the Warriors from the circle as the Bearcats (11-5, 4-2 PAC 7) took the loss.

Wookey scattered four hits and five walks while striking out six in her complete-game performance.

Kellie Reynolds was 2 for 4 for Paso Robles.

Pioneer Valley 3, San Luis Obispo 1

Andrea Reynolds struck out seven, walked two and gave up nine hits — four for extra bases — in the complete-game loss for the Tigers (8-8, 2-4 PAC 7).

Brandi Crabtree was 2 for 3, and Samantha Rivas was 1 for 3 with the only RBI for San Luis Obispo.

Templeton 7, Lompoc 4

Danita Hinton gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out seven in the complete-game win for the Eagles (3-12, 2-4 LPL).

Ashanti Alba was 2 for 4, and Erin Roberts was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored for Templeton.

North County Christian 18, Coast Union 7, 5 innings

Cheyenne Ricks gave up eight hits and struck out five in the complete game, and the Crusaders (5-3, 4-1 CVL) used an 11-run first inning to power past the Broncos.

Ricks was also 2 for 4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI, two of which came on a triple in the second inning. Alexandria Wisberg went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and a double for North County Christian.

St. Joseph 3, Arroyo Grande 1; Morro Bay 16, Santa Maria 6

No further information was available on either game.

BOYS TENNIS

San Luis Obispo 16, Paso Robles 2

The Tigers (8-3, 7-1 PAC 7) won all but two sets in a PAC 7 win over the Bearcats.

Josh Milla swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, Shahrukh Syed swept 7-5, 6-2, 6-0, and the Tigers didn’t drop a doubles set.

Arroyo Grande 12, Atascadero 6

Sean Hollister went 2-6, 6-0, 6-0, Eli Whittle was 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, and Jordan Hayashi went 6-0, 6-0, 0-6 to lead the Eagles (9-0 PAC 7) past the Greyhounds (5-4).

All three lost to Atascadero’s top singles player, Devin Barber. Arroyo Grande’s doubles tandem of Evan Lange and Danny Williams swept 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

Templeton 16, Santa Maria 2

The Eagles didn’t drop a set in singles, led by No. 1 Matt Murray’s 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 showing.

Eric Fragione and Michael Murray had a sweep in doubles for Templeton (10-2, 8-1 LPL), winning 7-5, 6-4, 7-5.

Orcutt Academy 11, Coast Union 7

Kyle Reed won 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, and Alex Roper went 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, but the Broncos (3-6) fell.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Morro Bay 3, Nipomo 2

The Pirates (9-8, 2-1 Los Padres League) came back after losing 25-23, 25-19 to claim the win over the Titans, taking the last three sets 25-20, 25-18, 15-10.

Edward Griley led Morro Bay with 16 kills, and Noah Galicia finished with 11.

Marcus Zorovich finished with eight kills and 10 blocks, and Taylor Sutliff had nine kills for the Pirates.

Kirk Wilenius had 14 kills, and Alex Martinez had 25 assists for Nipomo (1-3 LPL).

Pioneer Valley 3, Paso Robles 0

The Bearcats lost 25-14, 25-13, 26-24 against the Panthers.

Richard Curl had nine blocks for Paso Robles (2-6, 0-5 PAC 7).

TRACK AND FIELD

BOYS: Atascadero 80, San Luis Obispo 50; GIRLS: San Luis Obispo 113, Atascadero 21

For the San Luis Obispo girls (6-0 PAC 7), Jessica Belingheri won the 300 meter hurdles (in 49.7 seconds) and the long jump (at 16 feet, 3 inches) and was also on the winning 400 relay team with Mikaylah Williams, Ashley Ellsworth and Ariel Becker (50.5 seconds).

Williams also won two events individually, the 400 (1:02.2) and 200 (26.3).

On the boys side, Atascadero’s Deonte Barnes won the 200 (23.3 seconds) and the 100 (11.1), and Matt Ross won the 110 high hurdles (16.2) and 300 hurdles (42.9) for the Greyhounds (2-3 PAC 7).

Also for Atascadero, Ethan Lewis won the 400 with a 54-second time, and Jacob Schwarm won the 800 in 2:04, a personal best.

BOYS GOLF

Mission Prep 267, Coast Union 282

Jedd Hasay and Cappa McGerail of the Royals tied for the best score with 47s in the 9-hole match at par-35 Morro Bay Golf Course. Joe Shorma carded a team-best 51 for the Broncos.
